Hey guys, I have an 81 or 82 motor in my 86 truck and was wondering what the timing is supposed to be set to on those years. Right now it's at 8* but seems a little fast. I've tried searching and can't find anything.

8* BTDC is correct .. the newer units are @ 5* ..
with a little wear on the gears , i always start @ 8 and tune it by ear

i run my carbed engine at 8 and if i get good gas 10. no pinging or detonation

8*???? I thought that my FSM says 0*? I am certain the FSM says that actually. Are you guys disabling the vacuum advance to set the timing? or leaving it connected? I have been trying to get this engine to run better and perhaps I have the timing set wrong.

 

I can't remember where I saw it now but the specs were 8*, 5* and 0* for differernt years. I know that 86 and up are supposed to be at 0. I'll try to find it again because it had a breakdown for the different years. Yes, I disconnected lines from vac advance and plugged them when I set mine. 8* seems to be working good for me so far.

 

anyone have a definitive answer on where the timing needs to be set?

 

Found this:
75-82 is 8 degrees BTDC
83-84 is 5 degrees BTDC
85 22R and 22RE 0 degrees TDC
86-87 22R 0 TDC
22RE and RTE 5 degrees BTDC

8 degrees BTDC...that's as "definite" as it gets.
