Timing chain difficulty

Worth trying...what? If the clips fell off I could maybe get new ones on through the shifter boot hole, or what? I'll work it back & forth later today and see if I can get them to fall off. If so...well, I think we know what happens then. If not....maybe I'm ok
Thank you
Thank you

Fiddling with the clips, is what I meant, sorry. BTW, we are referring to the throwout bearing clips, right? Not the throwout arm? I doubt you could get new bearing clips on without disassembly.
#143
Well...yes, we were talking throwout bearing hub clips. If they are on all the way in the photo I posted, then I'm not going to try to get them any further. I went and tried to move the fork from the outside just a bit ago....won't even move..issue? Also.......................I just read something about the release arm spring?
I don't remember anything about a spring, but it sure makes sense that something's got to help it return back to it's original position when I let off the clutch so... Looks like the transmission is coming back off. I guess I need to round up the next set of friends to see if some people who don't already know what a pain it is will help. Then I'll look at the release bearing clips. I talked to a shop here and they mentioned sometimes needing to bend the clips in a bit somewhere so that they'll hold better. I'm not excited to do this all over again. Oh well!

Naw, the spring is a clip that holds the release arm on its pivot. The pressure plate returns it to its position. Sounds like you are good. You may not need to do anything, I'm trying to visualize any impact the loose clips might have, rolling snake eyes.
Anybunny else?

Yeah, I'm just starting to confuse myself here, you're right. Is it an issue that I can't move the release arm? I figured I'd be able to push it back & forth. I'm starting to think of things that would make removing the tranny again worth it, and there are a few...I used threadlock on the flywheel bolts but not the pressure plate bolts..I certainly don't trust the clips...and shouldn't the arm move freely, or are the hydraulics that move it pretty strong, and so I wouldn't really be able to move it by hand?
Impact I see of loose clips is one coming off. Then I've got a bearing & hub rattling around on my input shaft & probably a clutch that won't disengage..but then I've been spending the last few days really thinking about and reading up on how a clutch really works in the first place and I'm guessing you're way ahead of me on that since I'm not completely there yet.
Well, before I go rounding people up I'll see what anyone else thinks. Looks like anyone with info on this site has left this thread up to you!!
With good reason, seems like anything you don't have an answer for you can find one for pretty quick. I would be interested to see what anybody else thinks, though. I guess right now I'm stuck on whether I should have been able to move the arm, or if it should feel stuck..and the loose clips

Sorry I'm on a roll. See I was picturing the release arm holding the bearing way back away from the clutch, but I guess the input shaft (am I calling that by it's right name?) really goes waay in there to the point where the release bearing is just about riding on the cover plate "teeth"? (or is actually riding on them?) So they'll just kick it back out once I let the clutch pedal out? So that would mean that if the bearing is sitting right on them, it really would take some serious pressure to move the release arm, which would mean I can stop stressing about that.
So if it's really being held so snugly in place, then maybe loose clips aren't such a big deal.....or maybe I'm just off in fantasy land again like with that "spring". That's what I get for looking at bits and peices of an FSM, plus a Haynes manual covering 20 years of different Toyota trucks.
Well, let me know how full of it I am.

Yes, you can stop stressing. You will not be able to actuate the release lever by hand.
The clips that are worrying you are probably ok too. I will give the disclaimer that I have not had the advantage of actually seeing in person what it is you are describing, but they look fine in the pics that you posted. The release bearing is supported by the input shaft collar and the clips do not have any serious pressure on them. I think you are fine.
I know what it is like to lose sleep over the fine details, and I think that is fairly common. If I was you, I would not remove the tranny again. Just my $0.02, you do what makes you most comfortable.

Thank you. I am slowly letting myself get excited about the truck..I will not take the transmission off again unless somebody comes forward with some personal experience on this telling me I'd better. All I've got left now is the oil pickup tube and oil pan, driveshafts, tranny & transfercase shifters, mechanincal fuel pump (waiting for spacer, should be here today), radiator, fan & hoses, distributer & spark plug wires and air filter assembly. Then all the fluids. Kind of a long list but basically all just regular tuneup stuff, and do-able in a night. Unless I run into too many missing bolts & need to order with Toyota again, I'll be turning the key this weekend!
By the way, is your avatar your hunting camp or something? I love the idea of spending a week or two out in a wall tent hunting, but for now I just head out on the weekends, & I've got a friend with a little cabin in an area where we can just walk 20 ft out the door and get a deer or elk, if there's any around. Very nice. Aside from the mountian lions...and Grizzlies. I got spooked out of a good spot last year by what I can only assume was a bear, since it was making a lot of noise, very close to me, and didn't change course even when I started making noise.

Yea, it is my hunting set-up. Actually, it is more like armed camping, because I never actually harvest any game! I do enjoy spending time in the woods, but I am past really caring about filling my tag. Now it is more of an excuse to get away from the city and enjoy the outdoors.

At some point I'll need to fix that heater hose....but for now I think I'll be keeping it this way. Only so much I can do at one time! It works, so that's good enough for this winter. The hot/cold control doesn't do anything. That cable that attaches to it just sticks through the firewall not attached to anything in the engine compartment. I'll need to see a photo or diagram of how it should look at some point.

I can understand that. For me it's getting a lot of meat to get me through the winter and, if I get an elk, the next summer and beyond, too. I love spending time out in the mountians, but when hunting season rolls around, I'm out there to get something. I love clean, lean good meat, and I can't afford the "organic free range" stuff they sell at the store. But even if I got an elk my first day out, I'd still go out with friends the rest of the season just for the fun of it.

Ok, I think I'm dealing with the oil pressure sending unit and temp sending unit now. I'm having trouble getting the wire for the temp to stay attached to the unit. Do I just need to bend the connector on the wire a bit so it's more snug? I should have taken a picture over lunch, sorry.
For the oil unit, does it screw into the hole just to the front of the oil filter, or somewhere else? I cannot get the wire to reach it, and the wire appears to be the way it should be (not caught up on anything), so I'm wondering if I've got the unit screwed into the block in the wrong place or something.

I do enjoy hunting, don't get me wrong. When I was younger I lived for it. I hunted and fished every single chance I got. I am just more layed back about it now. If I get something, fine. If not, I'm fine with that too. My wife loves to poke fun at me when I come home empty handed, especially because others in the family take it much more seriously than me and harvest several critters per year.
The last decent buck I took was in 1997. Here he is;

Nice animal!
If you want to fill tags, go antelope hunting. Less work, more marksmanship. I call it country club hunting, because it is warmer, there is not a lot of snow to walk through (usually none in the season I hunt), and all you have to contend with is Wyoming wind. (Last year I feared for my camper; it went from Wyoming 'breezy' - 30mph wind - to Wyoming 'windy' - 45 to 50mph gusts
) I have not taken an antelope at less than 350 yards. One at 450, give or take; that was pretty darn cool and a rush to see him drop. 300WSM's got reach. My son took one on the run at 220 yards, tough shot and boy what a proud moment.
On the oil pressure sender, you will see where the oil passage kinda sticks out on the block. Then you will see a threaded tapered hole. Hey, if you pick the wrong spot you'll know right away!! LOL Oil geyser.
Be sure to pull the coil and crank that baby till the oil pressure comes up. Then connect the coil and get the reward for all your hard work. Oh, and one other thing: slap some moly di grease on each lobe of the cam. You don't want it making any revolutions dry.

I'm with you, I know both sides. I went out my first few times hunting figuring I'm just in it for the meat, but it turns out I really like just about everything about it.
I'm trying to keep it cheap, just for that reason, it can easily get just as expensive as buying the meat. But for now I'm borrowing guns, hunting around town or, when I go to my friends cabin it's a 2 hour drive and at least two of us will ride in one vehicle, and we cook all our food so it's not too expensive at all. If I had access to really cheap grass fed bison, I might not hunt. Beef...maybe, but who knows. Even if hunting ends up being more $$, I still feel better about the meat than anything I find in the store. Won't get into the politics of that, though. : )
Some of my friends antelope hunt in eastern Montana. It's tasty stuff, that's for sure. I haven't been out for them, yet. Going for the most bang for my buck, which means elk. Or a couple deer near my friends cabin.
Ok, I'll make sure I can see what you're talking about with the oil. I'll have to figure out what the deal is with the other unit...maybe I'll get a photo posted tomorrow. Thanks!

Ok, I took photos but forgot my camera this morning. I figured out the temp unit, I was trying to plug the wrong thing into it. I think I can see now where the oil sending unit is supposed to go. It looks like the machine shop threaded a plug into there? I've got a few spots on the engine that have a "oil passage" looking thing like you described. On the pass. side of the engine where the unit goes, there's one going back from the oil filter, and one down. They each have a plug threaded in, allen wrench-type head, looks like maybe there's some teflon tape on the threads? Would that make sense? So I probably need to take one of those out & put the oil sending unit there?
Let's see, what else....I think that's it. Those bolts on the pass. side transfer case shifter base are a pain! I haven't tried them from under the truck yet, but maybe I can get them easier there. I didn't have much time last night, but I got all but 2 hoses back on, the radiator, fan and got the spark plugs in so I don't get any crap in there. Should have done that sooner but oh well, I haven't been doing too much on that side of the engine. Hopefully I'll be able to spend all of this evening. I still need to get the oil pickup tube dipped. I had just cleaned it off myself, but I noticed some crap inside the screen that I can't get to. Unfortunately my car's dead right now...makes running around town getting this stuff done a bit harder.

I feel the same way you do. Surprisingly, my wife, whom never liked the idea of eating wild game, feels just fine about it after I explained to her that you can not get any more "organic" than wild game meat.
Good luck with your truck. You are on the downhill slide for sure now!
