So rotate it just like a half inch back & forth or what? Because I'll need to keep it at TDC, right? Then it's a matter of figuring out if my distributer is at #1?

Yep, and yep. Cranked it over to build oil pressure (before I double checked the distributor... DOH! Oh well, easy enough to figure out. It's either one TDC or the other TDC

Got the transmission and transfercaser bolted together over the weekend, replaced the fuel filter and clutch slave cylinder, and I just keep cleaning anything I see that needs it. I hope the machine shop calls me this week..

Got mine running. Need to fab up a 2.25" cat back, I can tell it wants to breathe but can't. Partial throttle response is very good. Makes me rethink 5.29s for the 33s after all. Hmmm... but I do need to tow a heavy camper...
Got a weird idle problem but possibly due to needing to burp the coolant a little better... and I have a newly cleaned bench seat to replace the roached off-brand buckets the PO thought were just lovely...

Ah, a newly cleaned bench seat..I just put my seats back in last night (orginal very much not newly cleaned or newly anything). I'll be checking out some junkyards when it's running to see what's out there for seats.

With the shifter on my transmission, does the spring go in on top of the the....uh..."posts" which hold that...
Oh man, I don't have the lingo for this stuff. There are posts which hold the metal piece that needs to come off to get the shifter out. Does the spring in this metal piece sit on top of those posts, or should the posts be in the spring a bit? Know what I mean?
I'll get a photo posted if you don't manage to decode that.

Hmmm... well, if I am picturing what you are seeing, the spring is intended to be in compression between that push-twist-and-curse retainer, and the top of the shifter ball. It holds the shifter ball against the seat. Make sense? Narrow side down.
Fixed my weird idle. First issue with any Engnbldr stuff. The throttle body gasket just baaaaaaaarely didn't extend far enough down, which resulted in a sliiiiiiiight vacuum leak. Replaced with a two buck Toyota gasket, all mo betta now. Idles steady to 500RPM if I wanted it that low, which I don't.
Told Ted about it.

Interesting. Yeah, I'll be interested to see how mine finishes going back together. Hopefully smooth...if I don't hear from the machine shop soon I'm going to start getting really impatient..
Hopefully, since I'm not doing anything to the intake (other than cleaning it off), there are no serious issues there. I don't like messing around with the carb, but I suppose it's probably time I figured it out.

Hey Bill, so the plastic shifter seat goes through the spring? The spring will go in between the seat and the ball? So I need to push the spring on a bit?

Nope- that is not the shifter seat, by the way.
From the bottom up, it goes nylon shifter bushing, then shifter ball, then spring, then retainer on the top. You've got the spring below the shifter ball when it should go on top.
Basically you can insert the shifter such that the ball rides in the concave shifter seat (the bigger black donut that fits into the top of the transmission, on which the ball rotates - kind of like a hip joint, with the ball being the femur joint, and the shifter seat being the pelvic joint).
So how did you get the spring and retainer off the shifter anyway? Do you have a custom shifter with no larger diameter rubber isolated upper part or something? I can get mine off like that, but only because my shifter is now solid rod instead of the stock shifter. Had to cut the shifter to remove the spring and cap.

Well that sure makes more sense.
I dunno. The rubber-ish wrapping on it was not the really thick kind I've seen in some other people's photos...the kind with what I'm guessing is the "large diameter rubber" etc you're talking about. I've seen some that at the base the rubber gets really thick. Mine just basically had black shrink wrap on it, but a bit thicker. It was already coming off, so I peeled the rest off and just painted it black. Yeah, my entire shifter is just one rod. Was your '82 not that way? It's also got two bends in it.

So I guess I just need to slide the spring and retainer onto the top off the shifter, so it's on the other side of the ball? That makes more sense.I really do need to think about things more.

You should see my custom shifter. Snakey doesn't begin to describe it. The R151 was forward shift, then the whole drivetrain had to be moved forward 3"... it came up under the radio!

That would be funny to see. I like big shifters though, so that's cool. No short shifter for me, I love the look of full size Chevys & Fords with the like two foot shifter.
Yes, thinking is sometimes overrated....but I mean really. Some of this stuff I really just need to think about before starting to ask questions.

Well I did some searching and I can't find anything on getting the throwout bearing off the hub. I'm sure I don't really need the special tool, right?
On the bright side, the machine shop is finally caught up. I can pick my stuff up on Monday. I think I've got the process pretty figured out, I've been trying to go over it all while I've been waiting. We'll see..
I'm going to wait until both the engine and transmission are ready to go in before I put either in. I'm going to line them up on the floor of my garage, then put one, then the other in the truck. (my barber was a mechanic and mentioned this. Told me whichever way I decided to go-transmission in 1st or engine in 1st-to connect them on the floor, then put them in separately so I know they're already lined up...seems like good advice)

Throwout bearing should come off easily. You need to slide the clip retainer thingies off the throwout arm.
Dunno, not done it myself, but I have *heard* of guys assembling the motor and transmission and installing as a unit. That would be the easiest IF you can finagle the tranny under the shift tunnel. The tcase is easy to put on afterwards (if you like bench pressing). Make sure the tranny/tcase mating surfaces are clean, and use a good FIPG.
Dunno, not done it myself, but I have *heard* of guys assembling the motor and transmission and installing as a unit. That would be the easiest IF you can finagle the tranny under the shift tunnel. By the way, finished building my 2.25" Magnaflo cat-back system. Had it half built (to the muffler), and ran out of time, ran some errands, and noticed no improvement and even a slight drop in top end performance. And it had an annoying resonance in the cab.
Last night I built the rear tailpipe, and took it for a drive. Ah, there is the power. Much better than stock, and much better than a more free-flow system. 2.25" cat-back really is the bomb with the EB head and oversized SS valves and RV cam. Not very loud either, and the resonance is not there anymore.
Idle has gotten progressively smoother as the rings bed in too. I have a lot of room to try more advance up here a mile high, so I'm gonna try that next.

I cannot get the bearing off the hub.....clips are off. I even banged on the bearing a bit and it didn't budge.
I don't mean put them in as a unit, I just mean make sure the input shaft (?) lines up with the engine. So get them to fit together on the floor of the garage, no bolts, pull them apart, then put one in the truck, then the other, knowing it will be a little easier to line them up.
Is your truck ready for hunting season? I'm thinking mine will be. Now if only I could find a cheap gun....may go black powder just so I have a gun, since they're so cheap and I'm (now) so broke..

You know I did a bad thing with my Subaru when the unnamed muffler shop suggested skipping the cat to save me money...I did it. At first it was a bit loud, especially under load. Then it just went away. Not sure if something "seated" or it tuned itself or what, but it quieted down on its own. No difference in power, though, that I noticed.
