Thoughts on a good exhaust setup?

So my 2wd '79 pickup project is in dire need of new exhaust from the headers back, and I was curious if there was any brand of headers that would be recommended by you guys here on the forums? I'm staying with stock muffler, but replacing everything at an exhaust shop. I'll do the headers myself, so I was just wondering what headers would maybe give me a little get up and go, or maybe just a cleaner look in the engine bay.

Thoughts?

Everywhere that I.have read says to keep the manifold n.just run 2.25 exhaust from it back. Now I have seen that there is gonna be a different manifold/header between 2wd n the 4wd .

Ok, I'll just blast and coat my stock header/down pipe black and take the truck down to the exhaust shop and have all new 2.25 pipe welded in with a new oem muffler. Thanks for your advice.

Glad you brought this up Wid. I've been planing something myself lately, but I was just going to throw on a glass pack or some other strait through muffler but was shooting for 2". Good topic. And if someone has a video of that flow master 40 that'd be sweet too.

I Just installed a diy setup on mine, existing header 2.5" collector to a 2.5" pipe, CSI muffler, no kitty for about $130 in parts and some wire for the welder.

I bought a muffler, 4-45* angles, 1-90* and a tip and had a piece from the header to the muffler made at a shop. My bro welded it all up and it turned out sweet. I salvaged the old hangers and used all the stock locations

Sounds bad a$$ but it's loud as hell though, almost like I'm running nothing at all. If I was to do it again i'd go for 2-2.25" and a damn good muffler. My truck sounds like a V8 from the rear... don't get me wrong, i like it but i'd like it a lot more if it was quieter when accelerating.

listen to mine, link in my sig..not too loud can't hear it on the hwy.

obx headers 2.5" exhaust, downey muffler similar to a flowie.
4 banger sounded good too, with a downey header, before i swapped engines.

my 20r in my 79 4x4, had a used header i picked up cheap, with the stock exhaust(no cat)it didn't pick up much, but it was hard to tell pullin 33's.

i would go with a header and 2.1/4" or 2.5" exhaust with a high performance muffler, that will give it a little more power, maybe 10-15.

I think I am going to run stock manifold, no cat 2in piping to a thrush turbo muffler(made in usa) from autozone. I would run a header but can not find a used one.
Look for a used header in your area.

I wonder if you can use a '94 exhaust manifold on an older 22R like mine.

That is a cast piece, but it is a tuned 4 into 2 manifold! The output is a double pipe flange, joined within a foot or two into the downpipe link down near the frame.. I always wanted to try using it-keeping the two ports separate all the way to two separate tailpipes. That would sound good, and it would be low restriction flow, definitely. I assume the bolt pattern and maybe spacing is different on the 22RE head, and it would not work.

you can check exhaust manifold gaskets. if they are the same it should work.
