Steering wheel

As anybody put different wheels on their trucks?
Aftermarket or off of other trucks, preferably something a little smaller

I have a 1980 4X4 and I got an aftermarket steering wheel from a local parts house ( O'Reilly's). I can't remember the brand name but it is a three spoke chrome wheel that is smaller than the OEM wheel. It was not hard to swap out at all

You probably have a Grant wheel if it came from O'Reilly's. I have a Grant 3 spoke in my 81. You can go to the Grant web site and get the correct part numbers for your truck.

Here's the part number for the installation kit for an 81 Toyota Pickup.

I just ordered an identical wheel from Autozone on line to replace this 20 year old wheel. Had the new wheel sent to my house and had it in 3 days. Summit racing is another place to buy wheels from. Oh, the prices on Grants web site, are about twice what you can buy the wheels for at O'Rielly's, autozone, or Summit Racing.

My ranch truck ('82 4x4) has an aftermarket steering wheel that is smaller than stock. You might want to think twice about getting one if you do not have power steering. Mine does not have power steering or hi-steer, and it is difficult to turn when stopped, and will rip the wheel out of my hands if I hit a rock when I am not prepared (I do wheel it pretty hard, though). Other than that, it looks like it would be very easy to install.

It needs to be another Grant wheel since I use the grant removeable steering wheel adapter . https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f105...system-240126/

Stock wheel is a little over 15", current wheel is 13" based on assumption they are measured to the outside of the wheel.
The smaller wheel was a freebie. It is a little small-what do you guys recommend-14" or 15" wheel?

Mine is like the one pictured above with the stock wheel, and it's in the pictuure I posted above, I think it's 12.5". I'm running 35" tires, no power steering, no high steer, and I drive it everyday.

I recently drove an 82 2wd with one of those wheels, and it had as much steering effort as my 81 4wd before I installed PS. I also couldn't see some of the gauges without bending my head; may or may not matter to you. I would recommend against one of those if you don't have power steering.

The power steering on first gens is abysmal. Keep the wheel the same size if possible, or understand steering effort will increase.

Abysmal? I have no complaints about mine. I do one-handed parking lot maneuvers (stock SR5 wheel), and overall the truck's a lot nicer to drive than with Armstrong steering. IMO, PS is optional for a small 2wd, not for any meaningful 4wd.

(The worst was a PS steerbox without the pump hooked up. Even on 215's, that was quite a workout)

I have a small Grant wheel on my 1980 4X4 w/o PS and I don't have any problems with it. I have 31X10.50 tires on it. Granted, it is not a d/d and I don't do any extreme rock crawling or hard four wheeling with it. It is my go to hunting rig and gets a lot of use during the fall and winter taking me back & forth to the woods to slay deer and hogs.

First off I have PS on my 80. I got a smaller wheel from a JY Toyota car with the same spline as my stock steering shaft. I don't remember if it was a Corolla , Tercel or what. I fooled a couple people because it has the Toyota emblem embossed on the horn slammer.
It's a little close for seeing the dash but not too bad. And it looks correct.

I stuck a late 80's Camry wheel on my friend's 83 2wd truck. The horn ring doesn't match but the splines do and it works fine.

Old thread, but...

The PO put the small Grant wheel on my rig... I hate it...
I have to sort of duck y head to see the speedometer once I'm going more than 40 to see how fast I'm going, I feel like I'm driving a go-cart with that wheel.

Would love to put either an original wheel back on, or some other aftermarket that is bigger. I have power steering, so it's not so bad for steering, just not to my liking. As always YMMV...

Just get a bigger Grant wheel. Plenty on ebay, or buy a new one.

Yep, that is the plan, either another aftermarket one, or if I can find an original to my liking, I'll go that route.
I kind of want to do a semi restore on this truck. Make it look stock, but have some upgrades, as long as my wallet lets me...
