you dont need a new one just a new used steering box.

Could be lots of things on either one.

Anything in the steering system could be worn causing the slack.

Anythign in the braking system could be worn causing the soft pedal.

What have you checked?

The box may need adjusted ,there is a screw with a jam nut on top ,turn it a little at a time It is very easy to over adjust.

are your tie rods good? center link good?

brakes bled right? sounds like the master cylinder might need a rebuild

swamp fox, I'd like to know more about adjusting that jamnut...what happens when it's over adjusted and how do you check if you're at the right setting.

The way I set mine was to loosen the jam nut while holding the screw, then turn the screw clock wise an 1/8 of a turn and tighten the nut while holding the screw. Then try turning the steering wheel if it still has to much play repeat the steps above ,untill most of the play is gone.If you over adjust it will get hard to turn . You will need to play with the setting to get it right. It would be a good idea to check out the front end as suggested above for worn parts.

Thanks for the advice swampfox, just replaced my tie rods and rebuilt my centerlink and there is still just a little play, this sounds like just the trick

The brake issue was the master cylinder, swapped it out and its doin fine now, if i see a loss of fluid i will move further, I tightened the steering box adjuster a 1/4 of a turn and it seems a little better, i gotta get a pully for my powersteering tensioner and get it back goin before i can really feel it out
