Rod knock, 22re engine swap time? 79'

Hey guys! So i went out to gorman this weekend did some wheeling. On my way home i was going up hill and noticed my temp gauge was increasing quickly. So i pulled over asap and notice my truck began over heating. I walked and got some water put it in the radiator and checked my oil level, (5qts) full. Couldn't understand what it was. Turned the truck on let it run for 20mins seemed fine. Got back on the fwy then the truck began decreasing speed greatly then started hearing a rod knock and over heating. Got it towed home, not to sure what it could be but diffentily something wrong! It has a 22re with a 4sp trans. I am wondering if you guys think i should get the engine over hauled or possibly do an engine swap! Truck is basically stock. This is the first engine problem i have had since the swap. Let me know what you guys think i should do and if an engine swap would be a good idea then what engine?! thanks guys, heres a nice pic of the truck i took over the weekend.

Hi I got a 1979 Toyota 4X4 pickup 4speed with a r20, Your problem wouldnt be from the engine swap because the r22 is basically the same as the r20 but little bite bigger and has more power. It go's on the same motor mounts and basically the same connection. The knocking could be from when you over heated because when it over heats it burns off some of the oil even if said full when you check. It could of burn off the oil around a push rod and made it stick which would make it knock.

What "push rods" are you talking about? Aren't those in non-ohc engines to run the lifters? Did you just mean the rods (tween the crank and pistons)?

Tweek, stick with the 22r if it's nothing too major $$$, if you blew it up, put whatever you want in.

Turbo supra engine maybee????

I vote supra swap! Here's what the 7MG-TE motor is capable of http://www.youtube.com/user/NAPAuniv...e=results_main. It's apparently a tight fit a first gen truck, but it's been done many times. Seems to be a pretty straightforward swap, you should be capable of doing it if you swapped a 22re into a 20r truck.
