New to me truck

Just bought a new to me 83 yota pickup. Going to use it for a winter truck then once summer rolls around its going to be a trail rig/ back up truck. Just wanted a few pointers on what I should and shouldn't do and what I should look for.

Truck Info:
1983 Toyota 4x4 Pickup 22R 5 speed
240 000 Km
Cab floors and passenger bed side is rusted
Needs some TLC and brakes

So anyone have any good pointers on brakes for this, don't quite know what I need yet but I know pads/shoes are a must.

Might depend on what else is needed as far as "tlc." If the seals on your front axle are leaking, you might as well upgrade your brakes while you have the whole knuckle apart. For all the parts necessary by application, get pads and calipers for a '90 4Runner with a V6, then rotors for an '83 Land Cruiser, FJ60. It helps to have a larger master cylinder, too, but it can be run with stock til you need to replace it. The pedal will go farther down, but you will have improved braking power. As for the rear, I went with stock replacement, but couldn't bleed mine because the LSPV was clogged and not letting fluid get to the rear brakes at all, so I eliminated it with a manual valve with std to metric adapters from Front Range Offroad. There's a couple companies like marlincrawler and trail-gear that have the parts needed to upgrade the front brakes put together in a kit, also.

Upgrade your front brakes to v-6 calipers and LC vented rotors, a great upgrade

So a 1990 V6 4runner calipers along with a set of rotors off a 83 land cruiser? Also how do the prices reflect compared to stock? Also run regular brake pads or 4runner pads?

Front is in good shape. But the rear are toast, the line going into the (LSVP what ever that is) is rusted out. While trying to pull the drums off I ended up pulling the whole axle out and found out everything is toast. So few questions:

1. What disk brake rear end is a easy swap? 90 and up 4 runner?
2. What does the LSVP do is it like a proportioning valve?
3. How to tell the gear ratio of the JY axle, and my gear ratio?
4. Run stock leafs or JY leafs?
5. Are the spring perches the same?

Thanks guys, a link would be sweet.

Well, if you were still interested in the front upgrade, the prices are right about the same as stock replacement, and you'd use the v6 4Runner pads. For the rear, '90 4Runners aren't disc, just larger drums. I think the easiest rear brake swap is for Chevy calipers and discs, though I don't know the application offhand. Search this section, and also the '86-'95 truck section. There's at least Trail-Gear if you wanted to do brand new stuff, they have a conversion kit I believe. You'd need to replace the LSPV(Load Sensing Proportioning Valve) to do discs anyway. What's this JY axle? Jeep YJ?

I've read a lot about using the monte carlo stuff. Even got the plans for the brackets. I think I am going to do that, or at least get the brackets cut out at school.

Junk Yard (JY) if it can be found I would pick one up off a 04+ taco/4runner. That way I would have a wider rear end (don't know by how much) and disk brakes.

Also might have a little stronger rear end? But I don't know enough about that to say yes or no.

Is this the right proportioning valve?

Also can you get this anywhere in Canada?

Also can I run the brake line straight into the caliper or will I have to put a banjo bolt on the end?

That's the one I have. You'll just have to get adapters or figure out how to hook it up to the metric threads on the truck.

As for the 04+ rearends, not sure how much wider but at least 5". The 86-95 rearends are 3" wider, and the first Tacoma era rearends were another 2" wider than those. For the gear ratio, you'd have to go with the vin plate on the door frame and hope that nobody changed the gears.

Not sure about availability of this stuff in Canada, sorry.

Anyone have a link to truggying a toy? My rear frame is shot so I figure why put a lot of work to be back into square one.

Also if anyone knows if a truggy could get certified for Canadian roads?
