New guy, new(old) truck.

Well, just dropped in to say hi. I just bought a 81 Toyota 4x4, so I'll be spending a good bit of time here to figure out which mods I want to do. Anyway, saw the truck on Ebay and bought it out of auction. Yes, I paid too much for it, but I've always wanted one of these older Yotas. If the truck is anywhere close to what this guy says it is, I'll be happy. One thing he didn't mention in the add, but did tell me on the phone, is that the bed was changed out cause a tree fell on the original. I like the tailgate release better on the 82-83s anyway.
Tell me what y'all think..........

Wow- really clean interior... I am quite impressed. If the current bid is what you paid I would say you got a good deal! I like the truck!

HaHa...no, the bid it shows is what it was at when he closed the auction. I paid twice that. I talked with the guy quite a bit and, at this point, am optimistic that the truck is all that he claims. We'll see. I'm gonna go get it on Monday, probably. If it is as nice as it seems, I'll be more than happy with my purchase. As y'all know these little trucks are getting very hard to find in good condition.

very nice. i love the round headlights. and i don't' think you paid too much at all. you coud search for a year and might not find one that clean. one thing though..when you get it, will you post some bigger pics of the cd player install. i've been looking high and low about how to get a larger cd player in the dash(79-81 model year) without cutting all the supports out.
Thanks

It looks to me like everything from the cd player right is new. I think only the plastic to the left the player is the original bezel. I would like to see how it's supported behind there, though.

Yeah, that's a lot of money, but if you want this kind of truck, that thing is likely worth it. With a body & frame in good shape, everything else can be pretty easily rebuilt & replaced as it goes out.

good luck with your "new" truck. I just got a "new" 83 she has been sitting in a field for 5 years, the bed has ROTTED off and some small hole in the floor. the dash is also busted up ( from a crappy radio install) I made a new insert from a sheet of 1/4 inch lexan. looks alot better.

check your floor boards and the frame behind the cab (prone to rust)

even at paying over $3K you did OK. Very Clean little truck and appears to have been well taken of. Some of the trucks I looked at before I bought my '81 you would have thought had solid gold frames from what people wanted for some of the junk that is out there.

What are your plans for the truck?

I haven't completely decided on build plans yet. I'm leaning towards 5" springs, 35s, and 529s. Does that sound about right?? If I find out that I can do that and still run 70mph, thats what I'll do. Of course, I'd do OTT steering and probably dual shocks all around. Then again, I might just go with new 2" springs and 33s. Whatever, it will be fun!

didn't work

Well, it turns out that I didn't get the 81. I drove 12hrs round trip to pick it up and it wasn't quite as nice as the guy said it would be. He was very understanding and gave me a full refund. SOOOO....this morning, I found a very nice 89 4x4 about 3 miles from my house. Funny how things work, huh. See y'all on the other board!
