I am losing coolant from the back of my cyl. head

Hi,

So i have had this ongoing problem of losing coolant. I could never figure out where it was coming from, until I got under my RV and saw the back of the head smattered with coolant.

It looks like it is leaking from the exhaust transfer cover, that goes to the EGR.

Is there anything back there that's close to the coolant? Could the head be cracked?

There is a coolant passage bolted onto the back of the cylinder head. Not sure how hard it is to get at with the engine in the truck...I've only ever seen it when I had the head off.

It could be that, a cracked head, or a headgasket leak. Coolant passage is probably the most likely.

I thought it was a passage for exhaust gasses for the EGR?

That's because it's known sometimes as the EGR cooler

The EGR crossover plate on the back of the head is not a coolant passage. It routes the exhaust gases from the exhaust rail incorporated into the driverside of the head to EGR valve on the rear passenger side of the head. It does have coolant running accross the back side of the plate, but the the actual "crossover" portion of the part is for gases. It is possible to have a coolant leak there and it is nearly impossible to remove it without taking off the head.
