Does anyone have any pics or diagram of how the egr pasage way looks in a 22re head. I took of my egr valve and am wondering how far back the passage way goes so I can probe in there to clean. thanks to any responses.

Goes into the intake side of the head, then in back to the EGR cooler then up inside the exhaust side of the each of the exhaust ports, the small hole above the large exhaust port. Those holes are behind the two block off plates in the picture below:



I cleaned mine from the exhaust side, using a gun cleaning solvent sprayed into each port then after soaking for a while, used compressed air to blow the passages out (lots of black sooty solvent comes out the EGR valve port.

those holes above the exhaust ports that you blocked off are for the PAIR system, not the EGR

the EGR system pipes through the plate bolted to the back of the head

No PAIR on the '85/22RE. But yes, that is where the PAIR tubes would bolt up if present, but the EGR passages are still in the head behind those plates. THe PAIR gasses go out to the driver's side through the tubes and the EGR gasses go into the head towards the passenger side, then back to the plate (that is the EGR cooler) on the back of the head.

Superbleeder, just curious, but did you clean your EGR port in the one picture? It looks super clean. Mine gets full of carbon in like 3 days.

nope; that's right after I removed the valve

I'm not entirely convinced the valve was working properly to begin with, so there probably wasn't even any exhaust gases flowing through there



regardless, it got capped off anyhow during the rebuild

Oh you suck! I want to do that I wonder if the black carbon crap is a sign my engine is running improperly, and what it could tell me. Maybe rich or inproper timing. (Its running like crap, and i can't figure it out at them moment)

Superbleeder, how long ago did you block off the egr? Iam blocking off mine today. Is there any truth of a blocked egr to head gasket failure, also on a cali edition with the egr temp sensor when you use a 10k resistor does it change how the ecm sets up fuel/air mixture, or is it business as usual

Great thread!

I just did a HG and T-chain replacement and UGH this egr needs to go.
After doing a lot of research I think i've got it.

I just one question:

Related to the blockoff plate on the back of the head, did you use any sort of gasket? i'm leaking a little antifreeze from somewhere and I wanna say it's because of crossover plate that's on there right now (did not pull the motor... hard to get a wrench back there to tighten everything up good.)

Also, any chance you could upload a picture of the right side of the intake? I would like to see what vacuum tubes you plugged and which ones you didn't.

I would do anything to get rid of that passage. That thing is a mofo to get from not leaking. I messed with it for 2 hours. Then just took it to the mechanic.

Bleeder: I did the EGR block off when i dropped a new motor in (bought the 2 small plates in a cool blue anodized aluminum from a guy in Canada on eBay) but I just cleaned up the crossover plate on the back of the head, painted it and installed with a new gasket, PRESTO!!!!! no leaks either...........

Hi Guys,

New here. 1991 PU, 22R, 100K on rebuilt head. Code 71, EGR. EGR valve is good, clear. Engine won't stall at all when pulling vacuum. Told the rear head plate has to come off and carbon removed. I tried coming in from the EGR port on the head but no luck. Suspecting carbon in EGR passage in intake manifold and need some guidance there too? I'm up against (past) smog (Ca. vehicle) and could really use some help!

Clean your modulator. I have seen the vacuum hose on the bottom of it come off and set off the code. Check all hoses on the EGR and going to Plenum, they will be clogged also.

I just got back from working on my truck and did this:

Removed the pipe from the egr valve to the intake mainifold, pulled vacuum on the egr and exhaust gas is popping out!

So, it looks like my problem is in the intake manifold. Again, the engine does not stall when pulling vacuum on the egr valve and now we know that gas is getting to the intake manifold. Also, the engine does not die with the egr valve disconnected from the intake manifold. me thinks that should be huge air leak??

Can you tell me which hose are the plenum ones and how to clean/clear?
