hysteer questions

Is it worth it? my truck is an 82 daily driver, it has a 4 in suspension lift with 33 boggers. with the IFS steering box do you need power steering? What are the advantages and disadvantages of the swap?

I found that crossover steering was a vast improvement over stock on my '85. More precise on the road and lots stronger off road. You can probably use a manual IFS steering box, but the power assist is nice to have.

I put Hysteer on my '83 with 33 Boggers and it felt like a new rig, the steering improvement was like night and day. But my stock tie rod was bent and it wandered all over the place before i did the mod.

I feel it is worth it. My '81 is not a DD but as 4Crawler said, it feels much more precise. Plus it places the tie rod above the springs where it is a lot better protected.

I've never driven a truck with hysteer, but my stock push-pull works good enough for me and what i do. But someday i will upgrade when the funds are ready

I just want to get the play outta the steering and there is alot of talk here about the hysteer... I am not sure what i want to do right now... I know for sure that i want to do a power steering swap, its hell trying to turn boggers at a dead stop.

Do you have a drop drag link? Just get your PS going and tightening up your steering and go play.

this will help ..

because of the larger tires .. your feeling "slop" in your steering .

on the end of the drag link (both ends) is a threaded plug and a kotter key . pull the kotter key out and tighten the threaded plug ends .. this will tighten the spring and the "clamp" force on the ball ends .. be sure to grease as well .

you can tell when your done .. when you have some one move the steering wheel the steering should "react "

.

I find thats its the worst engineered part on the whole truck, High Steer is probably the best mod ive done yet. I spent $350 on the Trail gear kit including the steering box mount, $50 on the IFS box, sold my stock tie rod, box, drag link and j-arm for $100. I broke my drop drag link in my back yard with 3" of lift, two guys I wheel with have broken their j-arms both had the torque rod in place. Two things I dont screw around with on my vehicles, the steering and the brakes. I was all ready to do the j-arm ball flip mod but knowing how weak they are as is I didn't want to take my chances. So glad to have gotten rid of that stock system, it makes me wonder what they were thinking, crossover would have been so much easier to do, much safer and much more durable.

I guess it depends on the type of wheeling done. My first trip through the Rubicon Trail 10 years ago, out of 16 Toyotas over 3 days on the trail, we has one broken steering J-arm, one bent drag link and one toasted stock tie rod (under the springs).

i think it depends on what kind of wheeling your gonna be doing...i just go muddin..so hy-steer wouldnt do much for me...as i dont experience anything that could break my stock steering...i only 31x10.50's...at most i will run 33x13.50's...if i could find power steering stuff i would do the swap...but..idk what/where to get it from...like..i mean junkyard wise...what year trucks will work on my truck..what all do i need for it...

High Steer.

Find it steers better and it gets the tie rod up out of harms way.

If you got the cash, spring for power AND hydro assist too. Turns so silky smooth.
