Help remove my shifter!!

I need to pull my trans to find out what is going on in the bell housing and I am also replacing the shift socket and bushing. But I can't get the shifter out. Advice??

Push on the socket at the bottom of the shifter and turn it, it will pop out.

Are you talking about below the spring? Or are you saying push shifter down and turn? Which direction do I turn or does it matter

There's an aluminum cap on it. Push down, and turn. itll pop. IF you pull on it, you'll break it, and you will not be able to lock the shifter anymore. causing it to pop out when you drive

See the part in your picture that is missing on my tranny shifter in my picture below? That's the retainer that you have to push down and turn off - It's not even 1/8 of a turn and I believe it turns off to the left.

I think I would clean most of the dirt off first, as some will probably fall into your gear box the way it is.

Thinking the same thing. That would not be good. That looks like GA, NC or VA red mud.
