Help me decide 22rte or stay 22r
Hi. I found a 22rte with a bad turbo not too far, a lot cheaper than shipping. When you add in for a fuel pump, lines etc, cost might be round 1200. I like my 22r. It pulls strong and freshly rebuilt. City drive is fine. I can travel 65 average on the interstate. I used 91-93 octane. Saving money on gas can add up to the cost of a 22rte which means I will be throwing a good 22r away as there is not many old yota here.
From researching anything 22 is not going to be that fast. Turbo would be the best for the bucks. I want to convert to a 22re but I doubt I can find a complete set locally.
I am happy with my city driving and mpg. I am not so happy with my highway driving and mpg. Some small hills can be a challenge.
I am thinking of going with a weber, cams and header for the 22r. Maybe adding these would help me on the highway? Would adding a little more power help me on my highway mpg?
If I could do any swap I just want it to meet my needs. I don't mud, rock crawl, etc although I am attempted to try (milwaukee area if anyone know a place).
Thanks.

if you can get the rte as a whole, i mean wiring computer and all, i would go for it. bolts in and you have wiring to deal with but hey to some thats easy. ive been trying to find an rte to play with for a while but havent found a good one yet, good luck on the swap i think youll like turbo charged fuel injection compared to an old carbed motor

Personally I like my 22R carb'd way better than I liked my 22RE. (Never had the turbo though)
What appeals to me about the carbureted lifestyle is the tuneability. You can definitely squeeze out an mpg or maybe half a horse with just a slothead screwdriver. Big advantage when it comes to smog time, too. (Course you probly don't have that problem out there, do ya?) And cleaning's super easy.
Plus, if you actually use your turbo, you aint gonna be making major mileage improvements...
And hey, it's a truck. So what if you gotta take big hills in third gear at 55 mph? You can also scale mountainsides.
I'm probably just romantic about my engine configuration, but if I were you I'd get it out on the trail before making a decision on a swap. Some folks out there credit the 22R with magical powers. Can't attest to that personally but I will say that I love the way it feels offroad.
Love the stock carb, too. It has impressed me over and over with its ability to operate at extreme angles. But you could definitely do a little better in terms of gettin' up the road.
Googled you a trail, too! Nicolet National Forest has a network of OHV trails.

i personally really like the 22r. mine is a completely factory 81 22r. never been rebuilt, 96k miles.it runs great no matter high rpms on the freeway or offroad. i've actually swamped it a few times (woops) but it never hurt it. it's a freakin tractor engine. i can run 75 mph all day long on the freeways with my 5.29s and 35's with a 5 speed, hold 65 up passes. so i'd stay with it, just a good overrall engine.

Not just X2, but X100!
Engine swaps are for folks who love to continually tinker, fix, repair, adjust, modify and other wise baby sit their vehicles. If it's your daily driver, stick with stock parts as much as possible. You may or may not be perfectly happy with the performance but it's sure a lot easier to fix when you need to.

dont do the rte, non intercooled turbo engines suck, if anything you can make your own turbo setup for your 22r and it will work alot better, they have turbo setup on ebay for cheap and with some modifying you can have a pretty powerfull 4 banger,
check out " 22r turbo propane " on youtube the guys yota sounds extremely pissed off!

I decided to keep the 22r. I might get cams, adjustable cam gears and headers. How would not changing the carb be for this kind of mod. I'm not sure I want a weber yet. I want to get some other tires for daily instead of these km2. Kind of ruff on these streets.

I just got my '83 earlier this month as well. Was thinking of doing all kinds of mods at first, but now I think I'm just gonna leave her stock. No sense in fixing something that ain't broken!
Speaking of "broken", she was running a bit rough so I have her up at the shop now getting the carburetor dialed in and just an overall tune-up.
Make sure to check your steering wheel nut! Mine was almost loose enough to turn off by hand!

you decided against the 22RET...but you're asking about a 1uz? lmfao wtf...
and if your 22R can run CamS and cam gearS and headerS...i'd REAAAALLLLLLLYYYYY like to see some pics of it.
because last i knew, there was only ONE cam in the 22R head..and only ONE set of exhaust ports.
