Fuel pumps keep leaking 22r

So I rebuilt my top end a few years back, 4 years I think, and I've just had my third fuel pump take a steaming dump. I could smell raw gas super bad on my way home from work today and found fuel dripping steadily from the pump. no leaks on the fuel lines though. I have an early 22r with a weber 32/36, standard mechanical pump, and a Holley Pressure regulator. Could it be the regulator putting too much back pressure on the pump? I have a return line still hooked up as well. The regulator has only been in place since last fall and I haven't had any other fuel issues since I installed it.

I have heard of cases where a shim is needed between the block and the fuel pump. there may have been one stuck to the original pump when you first replaced it.

Like Akwheeler said, a common cause for these mechanical fuel pumps failing prematurely is the lack of a spacer / insulator between the head and the fuel pump.

Without the spacer / insulator, the pump arm gets over-extended and wears out the pump pretty fast.

I doubt the regulator is causing the problem, but I do not have any experience using a stock fuel pump with a Weber and a regulator.

Do you have a spacer / insulator installed (part reference: 23100C) ?

Re the spacer thing - I kinda recall from another post that there are 2 different spacers - 2 different widths.

Re the 32/36 what pressure are you running?

The OEM spacer is no longer available new (at least from the parts sources I have), but Rock Auto is showing a few available:

I agree with old87yota, you may be missing the spacer & that's wearing the pumps out fast. BTW there are supposed to be 2 gaskets, one between the head & spacer, & one between the spacer & pump flange.
