front drive line broke off

I have an 83 pickup and the last time I took it out 4x4 I was hill climbing with slight flex. As I climbed the hill about half way up all four of my front drive line bolts broke and the drive line fell off. Since that issue I had the front diff serviced with no issues but still worried about putting the drive line back on. Any thoughts on the issue?

make sure you inspect your nuts and bolts before you head out

inspect your TC for cracks. if your DS separated at the splines, make sure it is in phase (google that, not sure how to explain it but know that it is important)

if they have not found any problems it could of been bad bolts, rusted or something and u just put too much stress on them and they broke. replace and keep offroading it.

Red face

You did have the factory bolts in the driveshaft??

I tried just regular grade 5 bolts long ago nothing but trouble.

For those bolts to have broke they were loose

Bolts and nuts probably were not torqued properly. Same happened to me BITD when only 3 out of 4 of the front DS flange bolts were installed. A couple of them worked loose, then I gave it enough skinny pedal and BAM. Everybody thought I broke a CV but it was the front drive shaft. Don't ask me what I was thinking going out like that.

OC, I recently drooped my year axle too far and the rear driveline separate, no big deal except it's out of phase now and vibrates like a mofo. I took it to a show explained that the yoke just needed to be clocked until it was back in phase. I get it back and they've welded weights to it and the damn thing is still vibrating. I'm planning on cutting the weights since the driveline was perfectly balanced before but how do I get it back in phase?

the bolts on an 81 are smaller than later years you could get new ds flanges and yokes and get bigger bolts or use grade12 if you can find them

Still front drive shaft problems

I have an 83 Toyota pickup and was having some front drive shaft problems. I just serviced the front dif. put the drive shaft back on with stronger bolts and took it on the trail. In 4wheel drive I now have a knocking or clunking noise that seems to be coming from the drive shaft. Some say its U joints others saying grease the shaft. Any thoughts?
