figured since this being gen-specific i'd make the thread here rather than in the engine swap section..

For starters i have a 79 4x4 pickup with the 20R / L43 4spd combo. I've been planning on swapping it out for something better since day one. Don't get me wrong, it is a great motor, but it is indeed greatly under powered, and coupled with that trans, well, it really holds the truck back from its potential. Since my deal on a '87 Truck with a 22RET/R151F fell threw to him deciding to keep it...I would assume, since he never returned my calls, emails, or pm's (on a different board), and it still sits where it has been for about a year. I've gone threw the Chevy and Ford small block options and Buick V6 routes as well, and it always came up as it going to cost me more money thats its worth. So I have decided to stay Toyota.

Here are some things I'm looking into when doing the swap;

-I'd really like fuel injection
-Besides a 22RE, I'd like it to have a minimum of 150 horse
-reliability is key
-availability is another major key, I'm not looking to go to a junkyard and pay $700+ for a 3.4, i go to local u-pull it yards and 3.4 power vehicle's aren't in there yet
-Diesel is not where i want to go with this truck
-defiantly a 5spd behind it

so I guess I'm only looking at a 22RE and a 3.0, eh?

I would assume a 22RE would give me the cheapest, easiest results, but any 1st gen guys have experience with a 3.0 conversion into one of these?
or should i hold out for a 3.4 to come by for a good deal?

I know with a 3.0 you will have to clearance some items, whereas a 22re will fit right in with minor modifications. Something to keep in mind.

 

I heard that the 3.0 is pretty wide, trimming wouldn't bother me much

 

5MGE I6 out of an old Celica/Supra/Cressida can be done, 160hp, reliable.. Im betting you can find lots of info on the swap online.

cheeper then rebuilding the 22r , and re-gearing .. or , well basically the same .


and I still have the option of a supercharger

I think I will eventually be doing the 5MGE swap in mine, after some reading its pretty strait forward. I will just need to figure out an oil pan that can clear high steer, ive heard running rears up front and moving the box forward a bit fixes the problem or I could modify the oil pan, could even do a drivetrain/body lift but not necessary. Apparently il need a small body lift, like 1.5" for the motor to clear the firewall which is no problem, I can make that myself, I found info on wire splicing for the swap but its for trucks with 22RE's, shouldn't be too much different than mine. Motor mounts all you need to do is combine the stock ones with the 5MGE ones by drilling a 1/4" hole, The bellhousing/clutch you use is the Supra/Celica one (W58) and it bolts right up to the tranny apparently, clutch hooks up the same way as stock. Throttle cable used is from the Supra/Celica and it bolts right up. All I really need to do is find a wrecked/rusty or cheap Supra/Celica...

 

you should look into doing a 2rz or a 3rz swap. its a tacoma 4 cyl. i was reading about that one and dam its sapose to be really sweet. heres a link read up its nice

its says somewhere its such a bad ass because, the taco has a heavy body and chassie that when dropped into the 1st gens being so light its way more powerful. i would love to do this swap. trust me 3RZ that bitch!

 

the option of a supercharger down the road may sway me in the direction of 3.4...just have to find one lol

i know that the 3.0 gets a bad wrap but would the 3vze be a reasonable motor to swap in? a guy on a local board is selling the motor any wiring i would want, a R150F trans and t-case for $500 obo

i'm gunna have to hold out a while to save up some cash (just bought an 87 4Runner) so would it be better to save up for a 3.4 or a 2.7? and how much is a 3.4 going for at an actual junkyard?

rebuild the damn thing, convert to fuel injection, swap for a 5 speed, port and polish the head and bore it
headers and exhaust and a new cam you got a machine there

 

the damn thing is rebuilt, has a header and 2.5" exhaust,and how can i convert to fuel injection on a 20R? 22RE intake is not interchangeable between 20/22R, plus i would still have a 20R

a 5spd swap is already going down regardless of what motor is in front of it
