Engine question?
My 22r is burning a lot of oil.( 1-2 quarts of oil in 150 to 200 miles)
The truck has 135k miles on it.
Doe's anyone know why the truck is burning so munch oil with so low of miles?
Is there really anyway I can fix this without replacing the engine?

Yeah my truck needed a complete rebuild after 165,000. Just depends on the abuse it's taken. My best Toyota lasted 240,000 then blew the headgasket, but this one never made it close to that far. Where are you? I'm usually looking for parts if you decide to part it out, but that would be a shame. To me replacing everything is worth it on a cool old truck like this, but it's definitely personal preference. How bad of shape is the body & frame in? None of my business but I hate seeing a good truck parted out & taken off the road. If you can do a SAS you can do a rebuild, but I realize that it's only certain people who love 1st gens enough to keep them at any cost. Good luck whatever you end up doing! I may need parts!

But the truck also needs a new transmission,steering box,carb,new bed And a lot of other odds and ends.
I live in Santa Cruz Ca. The truck is 99% rust free (some rust in the bed).
EDIT: The truck is also a money pit. And I just feel I have put to munch money in to this truck ( I think I am getting close to $3,500 and I only had it 1 year). Right now I am putting more money to keep this truck on the road then I am making.

I hear you. I had to put in a new transmission and clutch along with my engine. And battery, shocks, master & release cylinder, some vacuum parts, swapped out quite a bit of the interior for nicer stuff...will take care of some rust probably next summer.

I think you and your dad could do it. Honestly these are some of the easiest motors to overhaul in my opinion. I have done several, it could be done in a weekend(saturday and sunday)if you know what you are doing and dont need any head work. Good luck with which ever way you go with it.

If you can find a used Toyota Factory Service manual I would get it, I found mine on ebay for about $40. it is so much better than a Haynes or Chilton's manual...

Right now I am looking at a 1995 4runner 3.slow to replace this truck.
But if this the deal doe's not go through. I will bit the bullet and swap the motor.
Who knows maybe even if I do buy the 4runner. I will swap the motor on the 83. And keep it as my 4wheeler. Like I always said you can never have to many toys!

When I was thinking about parting it out. I was going to sell everything (cab and frame to). Because the truck is rust free. So nothing would have gone to waste. It just not live on in one piece. But I am not going to part it out now. And if I can talk my dad in to letting me keep the 83 if I get the 4runner. I will swap the motor and it will live on for more 4wheeling.

The rebuild is easy to do. The Master rebuild kit will cost you around 250.00 from www.engnbldr.com , and the shipping is 22.00 to your door. If you have that much oil consumption i'm 99% sure you need a ring job. This is pretty easy thing to do. If you are really not sure if you are capable of the job you can have a mechanic do it for you. You are probably looking at around 500.00. The steering and transmission you can get from a donor truck at the local junkyard, probably another 300.00 bucks of parts. So for 800-1000 bucks you have a old truck with a new heart. It's straight axle and it's tough. Much tougher than that 4 runner that you will have to do a SAS swap to, not to mention the cost of the upkeep for the EFI and know how to properly maintain an EFI system. Do you know how to read computer code errors? Check relays? Know anything about pressurized fuel systems?
Much easier in the long run. Take the money you'd spend on that 4-runner and spend it on the truck.

i do agree with scooper and everybody else. plus if my dad agreed to do it with me as a project, id be all for it.....also my uncle got over 500K on his 79 pickup before he swapd the motor. it was runnin on about 2 cylinders by then, but hey, it was it still runnin.
