If you are really not sure if you are capable of the job you can have a mechanic do it for you. You are probably looking at around 500.00. The steering and transmission you can get from a donor truck at the local junkyard, probably another 300.00 bucks of parts. So for 800-1000 bucks you have a old truck with a new heart. It's straight axle and it's tough. Much tougher than that 4 runner that you will have to do a SAS swap to, not to mention the cost of the upkeep for the EFI and know how to properly maintain an EFI system. Do you know how to read computer code errors? Check relays? Know anything about pressurized fuel systems?

Much easier in the long run. Take the money you'd spend on that 4-runner and spend it on the truck.
I know nothing about EFI. Every car/truck I had always had a carb

What do I have to do to maintain a EFI system?

Well, if that's the route you really want to go, I would have to suggest reading and research. With mechanics, nothing beats hands on training. That's what mechanics is. I'm not certified but I have been working on cars with my father since I was old enough to hold a flashlight for him.

Be patient, that's the hardest part. If you are going to fix it, fix it right the first time or it will just give you trouble down the road, and usually that trouble comes at the worst time.

if you father is truly willing to help you. Then I would highly recommend you let him. The time you two spend together and what you will learn will be priceless. I promise you.

I will sell it to you.

The book is a little beat up but it's all there.

But first I want to make sure I am selling my 83. I really do not want to sell it.

Well we'll need to get back to each other. I've got a bid in for the one ocdropzone posted. If I don't get it, and you end up selling the truck, then we can talk. Thanks!

ok.

Also I got a chance to look at that 4runner today. And it's very nice. And I think it was never taken off the road. But the engine has a rod knock..

The guy wants $3,000 and he will not go down on the price.

So I may just swap a new motor in my 83.

So, you are selling your 83 Toyota because you don't feel like spending roughly 500 bucks to fix it and buying a 3000.00 dollar 4runner that has a rod knocking?

The grass is not always greener on the other side.

Have the head checked it may be leaking oil past the valve guides and seals. 135k is extreme low for yota rebuild on that 22r. I think head work may be in order. Is it leaking oil or actually burn burning it? Black smoke exhuast? If not its leaking and findout where. def a main seal if its leaking. but yea.

Is it burning it, or is it leaking it (like the front main seal)?

I am not sure where the oil is going. When the truck is cold it pures out blue smoke. But when the engine is hot it's not to bad.

I know the timing chain cover is leaking oil. But not that munch.

Also I just did a car fax report and found out the odometer has not worked for 10+ years.

Buy a cheap car then you have something to get around in and you can take all the time you want to repair and mod the truck the right way. When I was trying to build up my 2nd gen 4runner it was always such a hassle and I'd never be able to get rid of the pos engine in it while it was my dd. Now that I have a seperate dd I get a lot more done and do it the right way taking my time, they don't make new first gens so why not keep yours going.

No I want his tailgate!

That's too bad you've got to sell it, but it will find a good home, whole or in pieces!
