Question carb ?

Just figured out why my truck idles like poop on occasion. Leaky carb! But it leaks air all over the place, so massive vacuum leak, and not sure what to really do about it. one guys says new gasket between manifold and carb, one says new carb, and another says that a rebuild kit won't do it. well I know it's leaking air in more than one spot cuz you spray brake cleaner anywhere on the carb, and it idles faster. it also leaks fuel from the carb. thoughts? junkyard? rebuild kit? steal one?

here is a link to some vacuum line diagrams from my '81 Toyota factory service manual (there was 8 pages of them so i put them all in there)...maybe between these and the diagram under your hood you might get some of the vacuum junk figured out:

You might have a leak in the vacuum advance for the distributor, too.

If you've got that much going on you may wanna just get a webber, that way you'll have a new carb, and won't have to deal with all the vacuum lines.

I'm told if I go that way, I'll have to get all the complimentary stuff to go with the added fuel. True? Also I went to autozone(autoscary)and got prices, apparently they can get a couple of different ones. I'm leaning toward new carb instead of rebuild. Thoughts on them? Holley vs. Weber vs. well the reciept says FC. FC... wha? But is also says reman after so I assume remanufactured yota. slacker, you said you have some good ones? how much?

I had a leak, turned out to be base gasket, replaced that and it was fine. Also, if your EGR system is still you should just go on ahead and remove it. You'll eliminate a bunch of vacuum lines and clutter. Might also help leak if EGR is envolved.

I recommend staying away from rebuilt carbs from Auto-Zone or any other chain store. I usually sold carbs to people that had been through 2 or 3 AZ "rebuilts".

Run far away.

eek, thought those stores were supposed to be providing a service, not a pain in the arse. hmm, so remove the entire egr system? won't that make my mileage go down? I don't want to sound like a weiner, but I'm a student, and money pays for thing like food. and rent. and if I'm lucky, more food.

Start by changing your base gasket and go from there.

After that, look into rebuild kits.

I still run a stock carb - same one that came on the truck.
