Any fix for a slow / non respnsive tach?

The tachometer in my Trekker works sporadically , I noticed that when it warms up in the cab it starts to work but isnt very accurate, I know this is a dumb question but can you lube a tach with graphite or Teflon??

Thats REALLY funny man....the tach in MY Trekker is the EXACT same way...I really haven't gotten around to being really annoyed by it yet...when I do, I'll figure out how to fix it. Maybe someone here can shed some light and save both of us some time.

**edit** I was thinking it has more to do with the temp warming up in the engine compartment that makes it start working...I dunno.

Thats funny!! Im thinking that the factory lube inside the tach is a little gummy and when it warms up it starts moving but Im not 100%, I dont know if I can remove just the tach from the cluster to take it apart and see if the needle has resistance or if its just worn out!!! Must be a Trekker thing!

since you guys are 82 Trekker owners I will make you a deal on an 82-83 instrument cluster if your want it..got it off ebay thinking i was gonna convert my '81 but I don't feel like messing with converting to a square plug etc...reads 110980.x on the odometer...
than you can play with the tach to experiment...think it is a 2wd...basically just need enough out of it to cover shipping...

The tach on my 4Runner is going wacky too. Sometimes its too slow, sometimes its too fast. Any ideas? OP: sorry, just didn't wanna get flamed on for starting a new thread.

No way! Tach is fully electronic. Mine runs off the coil. There is a spring/wound thingy in there that allows the needle to move, if it's anything like the speedometer needle. You could carefully take it apart and see if it's gummed up, but I'd also wonder if it's not an electrical connection issue. My stereo in my truck only works when it's warm out...and obviously that's all electrical.

When I did the conversion from a standard cluster to an SR5 cluster, I actually took my mileage marker from my old cluster and moved it to the new one, so I messed around with the speedometer needle a bit. There's a (like I said) coiled wire set up that allows it to work the way it works. When I first put mine back together, it was bouncing on 0 when I was driving forward, and moved up when I went in reverse.. obviously I put it in the wrong way, so I had to do it the opposite way then it worked. Anyways, other than something electronic, that's the only part that could possibly require some "lube" or something. My guess would be that it's electical..

Yeah....I'm pretty sure it's an electrical "resistance" issue due to the fact that it's affected by temperature.

Anybody have anymore ideas here? I was going to take my cluster out and mess with it a bit to see if I can figure anything out. My tach seems to only work when it is cold outside haha!!
