83 Pickup - Drag Link Movement

Hey friends,

My drag link on my 83 Pickup had some twist movement so I ordered a rebuild kit just to be sure. I gave the link a good cleaning, assembled all the rebuild parts, filled with grease and installed it in the truck. But after tightening down, there is still a bit of twist movement. No forward/backward looseness, just twist. Is that normal or should that drag link be locked?

Thanks!

If I understand what you're describing correctly that is totally normal. In fact it is necessary. If you imagine your suspension working and the passenger wheel going up while the driver wheel goes down, or vice versa, the draglink needs to be able to "twist" and rotate on the balls of the pitman arm and knuckle arm in multiple directions otherwise it would snap. Is that the kind of twist you're talking about?

Hope that helps,

Sam

Absolutely that helps! Thanks Sam!

Is there any trick to setting the drag link preload correctly or just tighten the screw ends down until no forward/backward movement?

Glad that helps. There is a little bit of a trick to setting the preload. Here is the page from the 83 FSM:

The trick is that you use a large flat head screwdriver with a square shank and put a crescent wrench on the shank to get the necessary leverage to tighten it completely (if you look closely you can see this in the first image)

I highly recommend you get a copy of the FSM if you're going to be working on your truck. if you can't find a good paper copy, You can get this PDF for free courtesy of 83Toyota88 of Yotatech:
https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f114...wnload-261385/

But I'd really recommend the paper version. There are some other good books out there as well but the FSM is tops.

Brilliant. Back out 1 1/3 from tight. Thanks a ton for the tip and the PDF. Hugely helpful.

My pleasure. You'll find that the 1 1/3 will be kind of be designated by where the slot in the end cap aligns with the holes available for the cotter pin to go into.
