'80 makes clicking sound in front end in 4wd

My '80 pickup makes a clicking sound in the front end when engaged in 4x4. I thought it was the angle so I put axle shims in but it still makes noise. Does anyone know what this could be?

CV boot? (just kidding, you don't have those)
somebody put a baseball card in your spokes (damn kids)
do birfields click? (never had a solid axle toyota)

is it dependant on just speed? or does turning make it worse?

you could pull the driveshaft, lock the hubs and drive around, if it stops making the noise then it's something with the driveshaft (i have no idea what that could be) if it still makes the noise then you know it's not the driveshaft angle

I'm not 100% that this would be an effective way a deducing your problem, and my logic may be incorrect so anyone feel free to chime in and correct me

hopefully that will point you in the right direction, like I said, I'm not %100 sure this will work, but it could tell you something

another thing you could do is get the front wheels off the ground lock the hubs and spin the wheels by hand see if you hear the noise that way

Do you wheel it hard? What size tires? Could be a cracked birf.

No .. I ment the DRIVE shaft or Proppeler shaft as sometimes called ... just like I said .

If its a factory shaft , it has a constant velosity up by the transfer case . if not then I didnt know you changed it . something you didnt mention .

Put it up on jack stands and let er idle. Get under there and listen for the noise. That'll tell you.

Could be a cracked birfield housing. Mine made a clicking noise when they failed. Also check the CV and u-joint on the front driveshaft. Should be no play ferlt in the joints.

I've had a clicking noise come from the CV on the front shaft on my 82. Took it apart and the pin in the CV was screwed so it had play. Alot of people dont grease the shafts correctly and this could be one of them.

Mine did the same thing its more than likely the front drive shaft where the two u-joints are.
