I got this at the end of summer and drove it a little. I parked the truck and it sat for a few months. I did top off the fuel tank with fresh fuel since I knew it may sit for awhile this winter.

I needed to move the truck to a different location. I got her running just fine and let it warm up since it was cold outside. I walked inside for a minute and when I came back out it had shut off. Didn't appear to overheat or anything just shut down.

I tried a few times to get it started and it did for a second and died.

After a little inspection there did seem to be some corrosion on the "points?" in the distributor cap. Not sure of the correct terminology. I was planning on doing a "tuneup" before I really started using the truck more.

What else should I replace aside from this list?

-Distributor cap
-Wires ( if needed)
-Fuel filter

If the key was left on without the engine running you may have burnt the points, get a new set along with a condenser, cap, and rotor. If the wires are more than 4 years old replace them too.

 

Well I added the fuel stabilizer and let it sit for a few days. I tried starting it up and it fired up but ran really bad. I had to hold the pedal down for it to keep running but it barely ran.

Come to find out someone at work had removed the dist. cap to inspect it and see if it was corroded. I'm assuming everything it out of time now. I guess I'll just replace everything now since I have to re time it anyways.

 

well it definatly sounds like you could have a timing problem if you have a timing light you could try and check that for the period that it runs also you shold check if you have good fuel pressure...also by chance this could have happend i rebuilt the engine in my 79 it's a 20r and you might have the 18rc but by chance you could have a 20r engine also but anyways my dad gave me the truck because it blew a piston skirt and so he bought a new truck and gave me his after the rebuild the truck would run for probably about 20 to 30 min. then die on me for no reason i thought it was the fuel pump so i took the bed off and replaced that and it still was having the problem, so i took the carburator apart and there is a little needle in the carb that had a small ring of corossion on it from sitting for so long and when the truck got hot that ring acted like glue and shut the fuel off to the engine, all i did was brush that ring off and the truck ran perfect.

 

Confused? I thought 20r carb'd motors had fuel pumps on pass. side of engine?

 

the 20r motor may or may not have a fuel pump on the frame rail but there is also the main fuel pump in the gas tank the one that may or may not be on the rail is just to give better fuel pressure to the carb instead of having the one in the tank do all the work.

Is the fuel pump on the side of the engine, sometimes a third pump? One poss. in tank, one poss. on frame rail and, one on side of engine? If so, what years does this apply to?

 

Yeah check it out...but my truck (83) has one fuel pump, on the cylinder head in front of the carb.

 

I could only find one, on my 79 4wd 20r, 83 4wd 20r and 84 4wd 22r , but did not check inside fuel tank. I assumed that the only thing inside fuel tank was the pick up screen and fuel gauge sending unit?

 

P.S. all are carb'd

 

yah there is a pump in the tank at least on my 20r 79' its pretty much a definate thing that there is a fuel pump in or on top of the gas tank in every vehicle

Electric pumps are located in the tank. Mechanical pumps (on 22/20r's) are located on the passenger side of the head.

For some reason, some 20r's got the electric and some got the mechanical. My 77 2wd had an electric pump, but my friends 79 4wd has a mechanical one. Only thing I can think is maybe toyota ran electric ones on cali models?

No vehicle I know of has both, and certainly not my 82.

There was a similar topic on the Marlin Crawler forum and Marlin himself chimed in and said that on 20R's (and I'm guessing he must have just meant some 20r's), there is an electric fuel pump in the tank, which is actually grounded to the oil pressure sending unit so that the pump won't work if there's no oil pressure (pretty cool but not relavent to what we're talking about here). Anyways, I don't think any 22R has a pump in the tank, they only have the mechanical one on the head. I can even scan & post the diagram in my '83 FSM if anyone wants to see. From what I remember it just shows two tubes and a screen.

 

I know it's an old thread but I wanted to update it. After giving it new plugs, dist cap, etc.. everything is working great, and it idles great. Thanks again.

 

Thanks for the update! It's too often that I search for something, find a thread on it, and the original poster never comes back to say if they fixed the problem or not so the thread doesn't do me much good. Glad to hear it's working.

 

I can't stand threads that were left under answered.

In my situation it seemed to be a combination of old gas, and a badly timed engine. Always ran a little rough but with the old gas it just stopped running. A little regular maintenance can really pay off.
