I tried pulling each plug wire individually and no difference in noise at all. Definitely seems to be getting a little worse. Got a V8 from a buddy and a turbo tranny. Might just end up going that route.

i tried to diagnose everything, i cannot figure it out.
yote8082, do you have the metal timing chain guides?
i think this may be the issue as i had no play when i put my block together,.

nope, no exhaust leak here. I ruled out everything except for the timming components and i did not drop the oil pan yet. Like i said , i have 15,000 miles on it so far, and just on friday i ran a muddy hill peggin 5grand for at least 15 to 20 seconds straight. no issues,
i also drive about 150 to 200 miles a day for work.

the motor is out of my brother in laws beater 2wd 94 truck. he was gonna crush it and i had a itch to pull the motor and stuff it in my truck. the historu on this motor is about 50,000 miles befor i got it, his dad had it rebuilt by a local shop. new pistons and aftermarket head, used block. it was bored .020 when i opened it up so i decided to just re ring it hone it and put new bearings in it.
i also did a port and polish on the head my self, i took quite a bit out of the seats in order to smooth it into the ports. could this do it?

I do have the metal backed guides but checked them and no wear through the plastic liner. Definitely not exhaust leak. It's internal. Probably just gonna run it for a while until I do the V8 swap. It's basicly my play toy so think it will be a fun project. I really do appreciate all the input though. Will probably go through engine again since it's probably the start of piston slap if anybody near Eureka,CA is looking for a cheap pumped 22R hit me up. Will post when motor is ready to go. Thanks everybody.

its funny you guys swear it couldnt be bottom end, my engine was giving me the same problems. At idle and deceleration, it would give a nice knock, almost sounds like a "jake break", with the pitch of the sound bogging down as the rpms decrease. Well, i havent taken it apart yet because im out to sea, but im dead sure its a main bearing and/or rod bearings. Either or, for me, its a complete engine rebuild. I bought a reuild and resurfaced head a couple days ago complete for only 150. Gonna throw that on there i think, along with re-surfaced crank (depends how bad it is) and new rods and pistons. Does anyone out there think this is a stupid idea? i guess what im asking, is, rebuild motor i have or buy new one? thanks for any input

Well,I have 30,000+ miles on my rebuild. Seems as if I run. Thicker oil or right after I. Start it and I drive in a parking lot, in gear deceleration it clacks so bad and sounds like a rod knock. But it hauls but and drives/sounds great oterwise on all other conditions. So ill keep driving it till it breaks then swap in a different long block (i'd hate to rebuild it and do the same thing. I have so much time in the port and polish but id rather not take the chance)

3 years later..... What was the source of the noise. I have the exact same noise. Sounds like a Powerstroke diesel at idle. Smooths out at about 1300 rpm.

Anything? Mine just started these exact symptoms yesterday. the knock gets less loud as rpms go down.. No problems accelerating, but on decel.. I can hear it from inside..

I adjusted the valves to spec, and it actually got worse??

Mine was doing the exact same thing. I got under it and had someone rev it up and sounded like the tap was coming from the clutch. I pulled the trans and clutch was shot and two of the springs in the center of the clutch were loose. I could work them up and down with one finger and it made the sound we are all talking about.

I am really confused, I tried the trick of pulling the spark plug wires, a cylinder at a time.. Sound didn't go away..

I tried adjusting valves to .008 .012 .. Made it worse.. So I set them back to what they were.. .007 and .010..

I was having some some clutch issues, but I replaced the slave cylinder and that went away..

So I am kinda stumped.

have you gotten under the truck and had someone rev the engine to see if the sound is coming from the bell housing?

I have not, but I did turn up the idle pretty high, and I still can't tell..

Edit*

My engine seems to be running rather hot compared to normal temps.. (It is summer though, so maybe I am imagining that)..
