22R tick/knock at idle and decel
I have a 82 22R I recently rebuilt 2500 miles ago. It recently developed a ticking/knocking sound at idle-2000 rpms espescially on decel. Thought valves needed adjusting, but didn't help any.
Any thoughts?...could water pump sound this way. What does a bad wristpin (piston slap) sound like? Any input would be much appreciated.

Ok, here's an update. Got stethoscope out and sounds like it's in the bottom end right where bellhousing meets block. Pulled pan and inspected and gauged clearance on rod bearings...all good. Just rebuilt this engine like 6 months ago so not sure what's up. Could it be a bad wristpin??

OK is the sound like this: "Tap tap tap" "Tick tick tick" "clack clack clack" "knock knock knock" "Ba ba ba ba" "Screech ta ta tap screech ta ta tap"........... Got oil? Chain slapping.... once a good ole 22r gets broke in shes gonna have valve chatter almost no matter what... Motor mounts? Something loose vibrating against motor? Bolts loose? Trans to motor mounting bolts tight?

this will sound dumb but is it deffinatly in the motor an dnot in the clutch assembly?
other than that valves are tight rod is guagued and clearance. was the oil clean when u pulled the pan any signs of bad wear did u roll the motor by hand so you could look in each cyclinder and maybe feel a catch or anyhing like that? just wondering its hard to help when ur almost a country away

That def does not sound like bottom end. It almost sounded like a vlave for a min... but then kinda like chain.... i'd check them valves again.... see if they are in spec...... Check and see if the rockers are not too loose... check chain... hows your oil pressure?

All new pistons, wristpins, and bushings. Hit maybe 4500 a couple times real quick, that's it. Couple others said they thought piston slap, just wanted more opinions. Might just be pulling the head off here soon.

If it was piston slap it would have had that sound upon rebuild first start.... unless its always had that sound and ur just now coming out with it...... If you ran high rpms for a long period of time before you may have loosed up some things....

last time i heard that noise it ended up dead. i would say your going to loose or spin something soon...if it was me i would just tear it all down and find out what the cause is. Its time and money but to me well worth it.
have you even done an engine flush before? or ran anything but oil through your block

Yeah just had block and head at shop all passages clear. Gonna pull the head and see if it's a wristpin. I plasti-gauged all bearings when building so can't see being rod or main bearings since I've been real easy on engine and has good oil pressure. Also sound does not stay through rpm range. Just up to about 2000 and especially on decel.

are you sure all of your oil holes are lined up on your caps etc? i would say more than likely its just the start of slap. im just throwing things out there it sounds like you have been through everything, when you built it. doesn't rule out a defective part though. let us know what you find out when you pull the head.

Yeah I've had plenty of parts fail early on. I'll be pulling #4 out and find out soon enough I guess. I'll let ya guys know thanks for all the input.

my motor is making the same exact sound. i rebuilt it with all lc parts , had a machine shop put new pin bushings in, ran quiet for 200 miles and then it started exactly that.
perfectly quiet at start up, once i get temp it starts, above 1300 rpm it goes away.
i now have 15000 miles on the rebuild so i dont think its going to be anyting terminal. hope yours is still fine.
please post up any news as i am also wondering.
i also checked all the valves 4 times i opened up the filters nothng, filtered the oil when draining it -clean!
i used 20-50 plus a quart of lucas and it seemed to change the knock but i think it was my imagination,
it runs so dam good though, perfectly quiet on the freeway.
