Sorry To Revive and old thread....

I just replaced the seal on my 86 4x4. I had ordered and OEM seal before I read this thread about the 1991, thinner variant of seal so while I was waiting for that, I had a buddy pick up the thinner seal from Toyota in the city.

I will admit, that was, for the most part, an easy job: I left in the radiator and fan, only removing the fan belt. I bungeed my breaker bar under the passenger side frame and twitched the key to get the bolt broken loose. All silly easy for a novice like me.

I had a shock when I used my Modified HF seal puller. One faint tap and the seal shot out. I put the seal in with two fingers and repeated the removal. I saw the wear groove talked about but I can't help but think this incredibly loose fit had something to do with the leak.

My next surprise came when I tried to press in the thin seal. I had turned and cup affair to to press the seal in with the balancer bolt. There is no way I could get it started straight. I finally pressed in the OEM seal with no problems. It all went back together rin 10 minutes.

I am again grateful for the expert advice and experience posted on this site. If anybody's got a hint on how to get that thin seal in, I'd be appreciative.
Regards,

It might be easier to just remove the oil pump and drive the seal in with a seal driver. You can borrow one from Autozone, or buy one at Harbor Freight for cheap. Replacing the o-ring around the oil pump is a good idea anyway since you are this close. Just be sure to put the bolts in the same place as they are different sizes, and prime the oil pump by packing it with Vaseline.

Thanks. I considered that option once I had the old seal out but I live out in the sticks and that would have left the ride dry-docked. Next time I will. I replaced the oil pump a year ago -bought it with the crank seal pre-installed. I don't think I'll be doing that again. I got looking at the seal I pulled last night and it looks as though there was no coating whatsoever on the outside of the "metal" portion. Felt like hard plastic, actually. Doomed to fail.~AMMOe
