1982 Shifter question

I have a 1982 4x4 SR5. I just got done replacing my shifter bushings as my shifting was getting difficult. I used the Marlin brand. Anyway after installing it I am still having issues. I am trying to find a picture of the end of the shifter itself. Mine seems to be worn but I am very new to Toyotas so I might be mistaken. I have tried to find sites with diagrams but no luck. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Miss driving my truck big time...Thanks Kyle

Should look something like this:

Under the plastic end cap is a spherical end.

Grooves should be a single width and square sides typically, like a dado groove in a piece of wood.

WOW...mine started as a single width hahaha. I just didnt know how the shifter should look in relation with the pins right about the shifter seat bushing. I am trying to learn all of this but my service booklet doesnt show much. Now I just have to locate a good used shifter..a new challenge..LOL Thanks for your help. I appreciate it
BTW. I grew up in the SF Bay Area...Hayward

I have an extra shifter or two if you can't find one locally. Think I paid about $25 each for them.

Here are two that I have:

Looks like the earlier style (upper/right one) has slightly worn grooves, not as bad as yours, the later model style (lower/left one) looks pristine:

Postage would run $6.00 plus $25.00 for the shifter, Paypal address is "r.c.brown@ieee.org".

can you describe your shifting 'issues' a little better?

i can pretty much 'row' the gear shift around, i wonder if this is the cause...

My biggest issue was going into reverse. It just would grind. The few days I had to drive it to work I started the engine with it already in reverse. The other gears werent too bad to get into. Downshifting from 3rd to 2nd wasnt too good either. I did change the shifter bushings to the Marlin brand. Mine were wore out but not too bad. I never checked the shifter end until after I installed everything to find out it was still grinding...good thing for cameras and the forums Kyle

Or worn out syncro's in the tranny itself.

FYI all Toyota pickup's that ive driven cant be rolling when you put it into reverse or it will just grind.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I always thought reverse wasn't synchronized. Thus, worn out synchros would cause grinding into forward gears, but not reverse. My truck grinds into reverse if its moving or if I don't press the clutch enough. Thus, it may be a clutch problem.

[Once again sorry If I have misunderstood]

rowdy is right, there are no syncro's in reverse.

that is why you need to stop moving for a few seconds and have the revs down before you put it into gear. it is my understanding that there is no point of failure in reverse other than the gears not lining up to engage because of the lack of syncros.... where double clutching may be needed. any real issues would be clutch related.

what gear oil are you running? i just changed my gear oil out and replaced it with GL-5 (what's recommended) and found much harder shifting. many people here suggested i switch to GL-4 gear oil as the synchros tend to like it better. i haven't changed mine out yet but you may want to look into it.

Every Toyota I've ever driven would grind at least a little going into reverse.

While we are talking about manual transmissions on the L52, My shifter is loose and sometimes spins around. I was reading something about changing the shifter bushings. Is this something that can be done without removing the transmission? Where can I get new bushings? Is changing the bushings a difficult task? Thanks

You can do it from the front seat:

New bushings from Toyota or upgraded ones from Marlin:

Worthwhile pulling the shifter out to see what the base looks like. If the bushings are gone, that may be your problem, but if the side pins in the base or the grooves are worn out, then the new bushings may not totally fix the problem.

My 83' has an EXTREME amount of play. It goes into all the gears just fine, but the stick itself is super loose. The previous owner told me the two bushings were bad or gone. He told me he could only get the bushings from a dealer. He also told me he had ordered them but I was thinking about just changing them myself.

Would I need to drop the trany to do it or do they just slide on?
