1981 Yota Pickup Timing Cover

Hello everyone,

I'm looking for a the timing cover, and all of the timing components, gears, belt, etc, for a 1981 Pickup. I have done some searching online and can't seem to find anything. I figured you all would know where to source something like this. This is the first vintage (if you want to call it that) Toyota I've tried finding parts for. Really appreciate your help. Thanks in advance!

Welcome to Yota Tech. I've found Rock Auto to be pretty good on parts supply for these earlier trucks & their prices are pretty good. Here's the link for the Timing Covers:
https://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/...ing+cover,5737

You will also see listings there for Timing Sets (Gears, Chain & Tensioner), Timing Cover Gasket Sets (including new front crank oil seal), plus a ton of other parts.

Also, here is the diagram showing all the different bolt sizes, locations and torque specs in the Timing Cover/Water Pump:

I know the diagram says 1985 & up but the bolt sizes & locations are exactly the same for earlier 22R's & on the 20R. If you need replacement Timing Cover Hardware LCE has a set here: https://www.lceperformance.com/Timin...-p/1015039.htm

81 timing cover

I think I paid 75 for a new cover. From the Yota shop in Washington State. They also sell the original makers timing chain set. Rock Auto is great too but don't buy the Sealed Power set, chain is tooooo long. I think Yota charged me 54 for chain set. Also got the Aisin water pump and oil pump from them.

if your block has ever been surfaced then the new cover needs to be milled off the same amount otherwise it will never seal.

Awesome. I did a little more research and found a website called toyotapartsdeal, the prices seem a little steep though. Okay, noted about not getting the sealed power set. When you say the yota shop of WA, is that the name or is there a name I can google?

Thank you for the warm welcome!

Yotashop.com. also LCE in Arizona, prices are a bit high but great quality. 22re performance too, that's who I got my .20 over pistons, rings and bearings from. Yota shop for the OSK dual row timing chain kit is about the best price for high quality. LCE has Real Toyota water pumps. I just ordered mine, 58.00.

My mistake, I forgot to mention that this truck has a 2.2 diesel and has a timing belt instead of a chain. This one seems to be a little bit harder to find.

81 die

Since it is a Diesel I would still try Toyota on line, and your local dealer. Only as a last resort would I use Rock Auto. Sure some things from them are great, some OK and some are WTF!
So the parts are out there somewhere. Your dealer may give you a discount. Mine does. If you can find them from another seller look for brands like Aisin, OSK, and other Jap parts suppliers. The quality will be above the hencho in China crap. I guess I'm old as when I was a young man we all thought anything made in Japan was crap. Then they got their act together.
