Yeah the guy I bought it from used it to haul firewood in the winter time and he taught his kids how to drive stick with it so it's taken a few hits from a tree!! But it's got a good solid frame and not real rusty plus it was cheap! and over the years I have acquired all good body parts so it will look new once again!

Now is the dual latch tailgate an 81 and older thing? When did they come out with the single latch tailgate?

The center latch started sometime during the 81 production run...so you will find both styles on the 81's...mine was a late year and has the center latch

Ok another question for all you Toyota experts! I found a truck local that i am thinking about purchasing and i was wondering if some things were stock and if they are what kind of package it has. It has a sunroof, 5 speed, tach, A/C, buckets, and selectro hubs for the 4x4... I know its at least an SR5 but i have never seen these selectro hubs before and was wondering if they were stock also which package came with a sunroof? Thanks!

The 8th digit should be either a "D" for deluxe or "S" for SR5. Not sure what the B is after the date, mine just has AUG/ 81 which was the last month for 81 production........yours being a early 81 being built in Oct 80.....the 81's started production in Sept 80. Is the B printed on? or embosed on the metal plate?

If you mean the "Selectro" brand hubs, they were likely put on there by a PO since all 4WD trucks came with Aisin Hubs. From what I understand, Selectro hubs were pretty good hubs made by Sears (back when Sears made good stuff). I think they stopped producing them a while back, but I believe that Mile Marker may have the design rights as they now make "replica" Selectro hubs and parts. They were typically found on older Jeeps, Land Cruisers, Broncos, Scouts and other trucks as far back as the 1940's so you might want to check the front axle as I doubt they were made specifically for the Toyota Pickup - you might actually have a bigger and better axle under there.

As far as your other options, they were typical factory options; HOWEVER, there are a couple packages that had specific attributes or options. The "Black Package" was available from '79 to '83 and basically came in Black with silver striping, chrome trim and (I believe) black leather seats. There were 500 "Mojave Edition" available only in '83 came with several very specific features - I know that one was the small chrome mirrors and metallic gold or metallic beige paint. I'm not sure about the rest of the features, but Don (Suncomb on here) has one and could tell you all about it.

Here are a few links for you to look at to help you decipher what you found:
1) http://www.toyotareference.com/truck/1979-1983 - This one has a list of all the color codes and chassis codes.

2) http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/faq/vin/ - This one has a VIN decoder, but I'm not sure how accurate it is.

3) www.4x4wire.com/toyota/faq/parts/ - This one has more drivetrain specifics

4) http://paintref.com/cgi-bin/colorcod...=50&sort=codea - And some more paint code resources

Ok the 8th digit is a D so its a deluxe but yes the B is puzzling to me because mine also only has the date on there and no letter after it. It is stamped into the plate same as the date code right before it. I have tried to search with more info on this matter but am coming up dry so im hoping one of you will know more! Thanks for the help so far and keep it coming!

also if its a deluxe will it say sr5 on the tailgate? It also has what looks like original 4x4 on the bed on each side.

If it does have a SR5 decal on a Deluxe truck then either someone put it on there or its a different bed.

Yeah i guess someone could have just replaced the tailgate or like you said the whole bed... i really would like to get it and restore it to its all original and correct glory! Maybe someone stamped the B in the plate after production as like a way of ownership or something. Because i took a closer look and it looks like its a little bit newer of a mark than the other stamped markings but if anyone finds anything i would appreciate it!
