1980 Long bed build
#41
So I have decided to make a rear tire carrier, and something to carry a small lockable container\toolbox.
My poor sketch of what it will look like.

Back of the truck as it sits now.

Started with this box I got from the junkyard.

Cut it down some so it will be about the same width of the spare tire and so it doesn't stick out to far. Cut it down from 18" to 9".

And rhino lined.

Lastly I started making the swing-out portion. The hinges are 1" wide x 2" long with 1/2 bolts through the center. Should be strong enough.

Did some more work on the swing-out carrier. Getting pretty close to done but I have come to the realization that I way over built it.

Making the pin latch

Trial Fit

Seeing how it would be done complete

I really like the tires so far, can't think of one complaint. They are wearing well, nice and even, and are quite on the road. For the price I would recommend to anyone.

I really like this swap. Have you gone through that second tank yet? You still getting the 28mpg? How does the mileage compare to your om617 swap?
Also, how is the clearance under the hood? Did you have to body lift it?
Thanks

No I haven't finished the second tank yet. Since it isn't a DD any more it doesn't get a lot of use. But it is getting considerably better. On the second tank I have gone 230 miles and still at 3/4 of a tank and that's not taking into account the odometer being off for the tires. This swap for me is getting a bit more than the om617, I think I was getting around 23 mpg but it also had about double the miles on it.
The engine fits really well, no body lift and still have a couple inches to the hood. I like this engine over tr om617 because it was a lot cleaner to install, has less power, which is important because I blew up my g series transmission within 300 miles of the turbo swap. I did this swap because it was cheap, I spent about $200 total on it, and I got away from carburators.

Thanks for the info. I am really looking into doing a diesel swap, but have been turned off from the om617 because mileage that they seem to get. Don't get me wring, I know it is a truck and don't expect to get 40mpg, but I see little reason to sway an engine that requires a lot messing around to fit, only to get similar milage to a rebuilt 22r or 22re. Speed is also not a huge factor for me, as I used to drive vw buses and easily got used to puttering along.
Did you have to do anything very different in this swap than the 617 in terms of the pilot bearing bushing, adapter plate, or starter?
Thanks again.

Nope i did the same thing for pilot bearing, starter and flywheel on the om616 as the om617. I'm pretty sure they are exactly the same in those respects.
Yeah you definitely won't be fast with this swap, but I like it as it keeps me from getting tickets. Also in Oregon top speed is only 65 anyways.

Sorry guys I sold this awhile ago, I regret it but I'll just have to build something else.
It wasn't very powerful on the road, I think it came stock with 72hp and 100ftlbs but when your in low range its pretty nice.
I think it was one of the G series.
We need more on this engine, is there any dyno days you could go to? I'm interested in this swap as I am running a 1st gen also.

Sokoji,
I also sold my '82 2WD longbed with the Diesel 2L motor. It ran great, but it is no longer possible to buy main bearings, pistons, rod bearings, injectors, or even the vacuum pump that sits on the back of the alternator. Heck it was hard to find a head gasket, and I could not find an oil pan gasket! I decided I would be building a dinosaur if I converted my 83 SR5 4WD to diesel with that 2L. And it would have taken lots of work/time I don't have. I'll focus on 22R.
Oh well.
