Well, I did a bit of work on it got it sitting in there. Still need to clean up all the extra wiring and hoses. Don't know if anyone is following this but here is some pics.

I Mer-Yota?! Very clever! I'm interested in seeing how this turns out! You do know that those Mercedes motors run GREAT on used cooking oil, right? A friend of mine converted to cooking oil in his Mercedes diesel and has ran over 10,000 miles in the last year with not a single problem. It also helps that he's reeeeally good friends with some restaurant owners! However, if you're hungry you certainly don't want to get caught driving behind him...you will be craving french fries like none other!!

whatever you do, don't mess with that bitchin paint job. I always liked the dealer option graphics they put on these trucks.
IS that the 4 cyl MB?
Here is a short clip of it running.

my plans eventually, but 2.2 liter Toyota L
I found the truck in Rush Limbaugh's hometown (Cape Girardeau). I won't hold it against the truck
'82 with ~169k miles.
I'll wait a while before attempting the swap. The '83 SR5 has life left in it before it will need engine work, but eventually...

So Its getting close to drivable, but it does have a pretty good shake to it at idle, probably not make it all that fun to drive around town. Might try building a engine dampner into the mounts or maybe into the adapter plate since there is more room there.

excellent chimera
Is that engine a 1.9L diesel from early 60's MB? or a 2.0 or 2.3 from late sixties? I mean the fintail D series...
Those engines were notorious for longevity. When you get the kinks worked out, you should have a great vehicle.
NO I SEE the OM616 is more modern 2.4L engine. Very nice. It does fit perfectly Radiator should get a good air flow from that fan!

Toyota 4x4 does the work!
Now, see that's why I own a truck...
not a city truck with 21" chrome wheels, 30 series tires and a tonneau cover that gets washed every time it rains...not a duramax diesel with dually's to drive back and forth to the office... not a King ranch quad cab monster that hasn't seen a load of dirt or gravel in it's entire life...not a chromed out fake street legal Hummer to suck dollars out of my wallet!
No... a tough 4x4 goat that does the job without winning any races at 10% of the cost, and easy to work on! Oh, and does it all using half the fuel!
Nice pile of stumps!

Yeah this truck will be used for offroading but it still needs to be a truck capable of doing all the things it was built for, so I wont be doing anything that affects the bed size.
Built a new bumper to replace the flimsy factory, built it to roughly look the same but much stronger. Middle of the bumper is 3/8th c channel and wings are 3/16ths.

I like the fact that u where able keep the hood in tact this time. Do u have a special bell housing to adapt to the MB motor. does the the exhaust exist the passenger side of motor and does it interfere with clutch slave. I agree with keeping the paint intact.

As far as the bumper goes, I didn't really take any pictures while building it. But I reinforced the front frame with 2.5x.25 tube cut in half to make it flush with spring hangars. The bumper is held on by 6 7/16ths bolts, I just surface mounted the anchor points. I did triple passes on each side, so they are burned in pretty good, I did pull all those stumps out with it so it held up well. A couple of the stumps i had to get running start and even then I ended up wagging the truck on some of them. I was pretty happy that I figured it out that I could keeping everything stock such as the lower valence makes things pretty tight.
For the swap this engine fits a lot better than the om617, to bad it's not turbo. Also when I was doing my swap the last time I didn't have nearly as many tools as I do now, or experience. For example, I didn't even have welder when I mounted the engine, my wife bought it for me later, or I would have mounted it differently the first time. But I like this engine because I don't have to move the radiator or run hood pins or anything like that. The exhaust is on the passenger side and there is plenty of clearance between it and the clutch slave. No special bell housing for the swap just have to make up a simple adapter plate.
Still very excited about the mileage though. This tank I have gone 130 miles on the odo and it still hasn't reached the F on the fuel gauge. With the 20r I was well below half by now.

For a second I thought you had the license plate cut out to let the winch line out the hole!

Thanks for all te kind words. I actually relocated the turn signals into the clear lights that are used for the running lights that are next to the headlights. I really like it makes them more dual purpose and takes a lot of hassle out of building them into the bumper. I believe there is a write up on it somewhere on yota tech.
