1980 20R Manual Linkage Replacement HELP!

Hey everyone! Just picked up a 1980 toyota/mobile Traveler Class C RV. Toyota 20R, 4-Spd trans. Im new to Toyotas so i was hoping to find some help here.

My main concern with the truck is the shifter is so loose and sloppy that i cant tell wether im in 1st or 5th, i figure the linkage needs to be replaced but i cant find anyone who sells a replacement and would rather not buy a used set.

If anyone can steer me in the rite direction it would be greatly appreciated! This is site is awesome, already helped me out a great deal!

-Ty

well, not gonna find 5th on a 4 speed
I have not seen a source for new replacement linkages.
this link:

has links to several reliable parts sources.

Do the 4speeds have a shifter seat? If so, Marlin Crawler sells them and a new one will do a lot to improve that sloppiness.

not sure if the 2WD 4 Spd was a side shifter like the 4WD L43..if so Marlin doesn't have one.
sent a message to a friend that has a couple of 80 2WD trucks to check...

ha yea my bad, 1st and 4th perhaps! ha be either way very sloppy indeed. Its a 2wd dually in the rear, and i cant find a new linkage kit anywhere! Barely can find a used one but that defeats the whole purpose of doing that job, i already have used linkage in it ha.

Please somone steer me in the rite direction here.

Thanks again Ty

I think the trans is considered the "L-Series 4 Speed" trans used on that year 20R

If it's a top shift there shouldn't be any linkages really unless your looking "internal" to the top of the trans, but if your looking for linkages that's on the outside for the case it's got to be a side shift. Unless your talking about the shift fork stuff on the clutch.

IIRC not all "L's" were top shift though. Not much info on these things out there for 2wd stuff. Now if you look on your vin plate (on the door jam????) it should tell you exactly which trans you got.

if it's a top shift it's almost definitely the shifter bushing. i've replaced many shifter bushings on toyota trans and it helps extreamly well. if you have some tools you can take off the shifter boot. if the shifter isn't bolted down, you can push in and twist the silver ring under the smaller boot on the trani, then pull the stick out. if there's no big bushing in there, or a bunch of material that looks like crums, then you definitely need one.
