garage rafters as a engine hoist????

i need to get this 22-r out of the bed of my truck (truck has a 7 inch lift with 37s) my cherry picker wont reach high enough too get it out of the bed. what do you guys think if i put a 6x6 piece of wood across 3 rafters in my garage and a chain with a cum-along to hold the weight of the complete motor fluids and everything just for maybe two minutes while i pull the truck out and lower enough so i can get the cherry picker to it? not gonna blame anyone if the garage caves in lol.

Have you considered just taking your wheels off and putting it on jackstands so that the truck is almost sitting on the ground?

How big are your rafters? I would say anything bigger than a 2x6 and your good to go. Also maybe whats the span of your rafters?

When i was a wee lad my dad removed the sbc 350 out of our boat by the rafters, as well the same motor out of his old K5.

If it is a 2x4 or maybe even a 2x6 i would try and span across at least 4 of them. Anything bigger and i wouldn't worry to much.

Don't use the rafters i've seen it go bad, really bad! I don't have pics but a few years back i watched a guy do it and the rafters snapped and the engine fell into the back of his truck causing a lot of damage tho the truck and the garage.

2x4s spaced about 1 1/2 feet so total 4 1/2 feet i did it lol garage is still standing just not sure i would want to do it too many more times or with anything bigger than a 22r. the rafters didnt budge i just wouldnt want to explain that "accident' to the lanlords if something did go wrong. I was a little nervous

It's really not that difficult to do. I'd do that before I start running chains and hunks of wood through my rafters.

My garage roof has a huge sag in it from the previous owners doing this, I would not advise it.
Unfortunatly for me, some day laborers put a new roof on it after a chimney fire some years ago, right ontop of the old sagging structure. Now if I wanted to jack it up and put in a gluelam in I'd be ripping the new roof apart.
