Hey Bugzman, got pics of the SAS X? Never seen one before...

So now I've got a Landcruiser HJ60 (HJ means diesel). I'd like to install an Aussie in my Cruiser sometime and do another review, see how the locker works in the rear end in that application.

for sure.
Its owned by a long time friend pretty much my brother. over the last 5 years we have been building it up. we modeled the three link SAS off of all-pros Taco kit. I even think we used there links. a dana 44 up front, with 1 ton steering. it has Fox Coilovers up front at now has 8 pack rears after the 10 pack was to weak and ended up aiding in the rolling of the truck.

@coops I've had mine in for about 6 months and don't have any complaints. Install went well considering all I had to do was remove the 3rd member and take it to a friend who put the locker in. It went in pretty easy for him considering he's done gears, ARBs and tons of other stuff. I kinda like the ticking when coasting around corners, reminds me that it's there. And the tires do chirp on acceleration from a stop into a right hand turn. This winter we had a major freeze here in NM, several days of below zero temps and iced over roads, not a norm in Albuquerque where I live. There were a few times it got loose, but nothing major if you just pay attention and let off the gas. Also I took advantage of a couple iced over parking lots to get familiar with it, like I said icy roads are not real common where I live, I could see how the locker can make you break loose if you're not expecting it. I took the 4runner up to the mountains where we had about 4" of snow and had no problems granted I was alone and on a familiar trail not trying anything crazy.

Do you have a manual tranny? If you do, I say go for it, the locker is awesome. If you have an automatic, do not get it!! The locker will engage around corners at low speeds, such as parking lots, and pretty much drag the inside tire as it tries to keep up with the outside tire. With a manual you can just clutch in and remove all power to the rear tires. In an auto your stuck with dragging your tires around, and your tires WILL NOT LAST!! I learned the hard way.

Just seen this post on rear lockers. I took the Lock-Rite out of my Sons Toyota Surf about a year ago. ( A model probably not seen in the USA. Its the Rolls Royce version of the 4Runner with everything electrical, including sunroof. He had Lock Rite in both front and rear, but could not be bothered with the aggro of getting the front diff out and back in, so took his rear diff and swapped it over with mine. Who ever set up the backlash didnt know what they were doing, and as a result the tail shaft turns about an inch or more before it engages. Its damned annoying , so am waiting for the summer weather here in Australia to cool down before I take the diff out, and get someone who knows what they are doing to re set the backlash. The other annoying thing is that my 4runner has a tendency to either lift one side and steer left, or sometimes to the right, which is disconcerting to say the least. I have replaced all the bushes in the upper and lower control arms, but its only made a slight difference. Once on the road there is no annoying lifting or wanting to veer to one side. It only happens from a standing start, but hopefully when I get the backlash sorted out it might go away. And it will stop the clunking when I forget that it has a large amount of backlash!

what your talking about isnt to do with the backlash in the ring gear and pinion its the normal operating space in the locker itself. The central bar in the locker housing has a lot of room to move before it makes contact with the locker housing and forces the (under throttle) the two sides of the locker into the outter rings of teeth to engage the locker. This is why you get you your clunks pops and jerking between clutch/coast and throttle.

Get used to it or buy an ARB Yukon Air or Elocker

can anyone verify if this is the aussie for the 4cyl carrier?

http://www.aussielocker.com/index.ph...-xd-20830.html

if you use their vehicle search on the site it only brings up the v6 and IFS lockers....................

I cant see why it wont fit the 4 cyl 4runner as the rear axle housing is the same for the V6 and the 4 cylinder . US might be different from Australian Toyota 4runners, but I dont think so. Not many 4 cylinders ever came to Australia , mostly the V6 and diesel variants. Hope that helps

no the turbo4/v6 use a different third member, larger bearings and different stronger carrier than the normal 4 cylinder

Wouldnt the axle housing be the same ? I know here in Australia, one size fits all as far as the back axle goes. Just looked at the Aussie Locker website, and it states Aussie Locker XD24930 for 3.0 litre V6 and TURBO 4cylinder. For the standard 4cyl the part # is 20830. I understand now why the locker wont fit.
