Small Project: Hi Lift mount for 87 Pickup

I got tired of my jack just willy nilly sittin in the back. So I found some 2" C channel steel in the back yard to use.

I cut it with the chop saw
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fGEXiVc54VY
Drilled some holes with the drill press
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uU5tmLXObLo
Then I took the two pieces and welded them together with my trusty old MIG

Ground the welds and blasted it in the blast cabinet

Welded in the mounting stud

Welded on the bed

I was pretty proud of my welds. They usually suck really bad

And all mounted up

*constructive criticism* looks like you could use some more practice with the welder so you can lay dimes instead of long lines of bead.
Also, I'm scared for that flimsy bed rail that has to hold up that hilift now..

Other then that, nice work.

Im always open to constructive criticism. I do need more practice with layin down a good bead. I can burn a mean spot weld but thats about it. I don't do much weldin, obviously, but I should practice more often. As for the bed rail, I thought about that too after I welded it up there. I might slide the bed back a little and weld a gusset plate there.

im gonna throw out there that the hi lift protruding above the roof would snag a branch on my truck and most likely mangle the bed rail. could you maybe have set the jack at a 45ish degree angle so it did not stick out passed any body lines? besides that very crafty man nice work! and im sure you already considered my gripe but just a though. ive just seen a lot of truck visors and antennas etc get pretty stove up driving in the woods

I did think of that, after the fact of course. I think a 45 sould be alot better than than the 90 that I have it at. Im thinkin that some slight mods are in order lol. Hi lift mount 2.0 hahaha

Mount it level with the bed rail going front to rear on the sides or across behind the cab. Put it below the horizon of the bed if you can so it isn't sitting there saying "look at me, steal me"

most of the loggers in northern maine or people that are on the dirt roads a lot carry hi lifts for a number of uses and most are mounted at roughly a 45ish angle across the back and ya it looks kinda cool if you want it visible. thats how i always figured id mount mine but the 48" fits in my tool box out of the elements. Im sure youll figure it out.
