+1 to the square tubing+mitre cut idea. some 1/4" walled square tubing with appropriate braces would be PLENTY strong to hold a winch and would be good for structural safety. You could use almost any kind you like, too.

why dont you just cut angles and weld the tube together, then grind it smooth?

thats close enough to bent
