Chain Bumper

I've been thinking about making bumpers for a while now. Whats been holding me up is the lack of an apporiate metal bender. I was thinking of using some chain laying in the garage to make the bumper out of welded chain links. I have a welder and can use it very well, I understand there would be a lot of welding involved. This really isn't a problem for me, because i enjoy that part of it. I think it woudl look orginal, and be rather strong, I won't be using a winch anytime soon, and i would be using it for light mounting, and maybe a few tow points for when I get stuck.

Any Thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

not only do i think that would be really weak, i think it would look pretty ugly as well. even an advanced welder couldnt get enough weld onto those links to make strong joints, the links just arent big enough. how about buying pre-bent tubes for your angles?

I think it could look cool cosmetically, but I think it would be unsafe to rely on it structurally to protect you. I've seen people who weld up chain for mail box posts etc, but they are usually HUGE chains and the forces on them are minute compared to what your bumper should protect you from.

I say go for it, but back up the protection with tubing.

You'd better make a chain steering wheel to match...

Hey, if you can make it work, all the power to ya. Make sure to get some pics up...

If it doesn't work out, you could always sell it to one of those cheesy steak houses to hang on their wall.

its good that you're trying to think of alternative ideas, but this particular one i don't think will be terribly successful. personally i think itll look bad, but thats all personal preference. mechanically, i dont think its possible for just a welded chain to hold up to any sort of impact or pressure without any tube reinforcement or something like that.

So make it out of square tube with mitre cuts (or even kerf cut bends)instead of bent round tube...

I don't know...it would be original, that's for sure. Maybe some of that huge anchor chain off a freighter or something.
