so over the weekend i managed to wreck the water pump in my 2nd gen 4runner, 300km from home. On a sunday. I managed to get the thing fixed at a crappy tire, but it cost me 700 bucks. What a terrific weekend. Anyways, just wondering if its a common occurance or not. Mine was most likely the original, meaning it has close to 363,000kms old.

I just fixed mine about 4 or 5 weeks ago. It was leaking around the housing, so I pulled off the timing belt and put in a new waterpump. I had 192,xxx when it happened, so I can't complain. They go out sooner or later. Cost me about $170.

I haven't really heard a whole lot of waterpumps going out, but that's probably becuase most people replace them before they break when they do the timing belt.

Anyways, that's my $.02.

No, not a common occurance. Look how old it was. Had you been changing your coolant/anitfreeze at the specified times? I've got 130,000 miles on mine and not a problem yet. but of course mines a 3rd gen so it could have been made better (my disclaimer for the ahole that might bich at me for posting in a 2nd gen thread even though I own a 3rd).

ive changed it twice since ive owned the truck. ive only owned it since may though. the first time i got a flush right after i bought it, and the second time was when i blew up the hose leading to the sensor thing behind the intake. that was a b*tch to get at. i guess you guys are right that it was time for it to go, but i just wish it happened at home so i had the tools to fix it instead of trusting cnadian tire. on the plus side, the mechanic who worked on it owned a 2nd gen himself, so that made me feel a little better.

That's cool. good luck with it. Sounds like he knew what he was doing and you should rest assured it's done right.

indeed! luckily it was in town and not on the highway in the middle of nowhere. i was about to go back from edmonton to calgary, so those knowing the drive know that it would not be a good place to kill the pump

I put a new pump on every time the timing belt gets changed.Cheaper than 700 bucks.That guy that charged you that should be taken out and shot.At least a good caining.

he just works for the man. its the man that needs a caining. on the bright side, ive never gotten so much canadian tire money with one purchase...

you gotta realize he's in Canada, plus the parts cost. I know a water pump for my engine (oem) is pretty expensive and labor intensive. Do it yourself, yeah it's cheap. Have someone else do it, especially in Canada where prices are rediculous, it sounds about right to me.

I've always heard to change the water pump along with the 2nd timing belt change at 120,000 miles. First timing belt change is at 60,000 miles.
