Ok guys, the 2TR is NOTHING like the 3rz. Completely different motor series. ALL different.
Also, it responds well to a turbo, lots of ppl have done it, wit great results.

A bit of web searching seems to confirm this. I read elsewhere that they were the were the same except for VVTi, a mistake probably stemming from the fact that they're the same 2.7L displacement. Live and learn!

RE sludge- my 3RZ 4runner came with no maintenance records- the PO said he'd been pretty diligent but couldn't supply any evidence. The dealer where he got it 4 years earlier had some records of frequent oil changes up to when his service contract ended; it had a recent lube shop sticker when I bought it and the oil looked real clean.

I'm not getting any missing or other engine misbehavior, other than pretty relaxed throttle response and slightly worse mileage than I was hoping for- about 20-21mpg going pretty light on the pedal. I've cleaned the throttle body/intake, and the MAF sensor. I think I'll put in a new fuel filter, plugs and wires- even if performance doesn't change I'll know where I'm starting from. Then proceed with header and exhaust upgrades as funds allow.

It seems like a great motor, I think I'm going to be very happy with it. On the Cascade Mtn passes yesterday I had a much easier time than with my 22RE 1988 4runner...
