Angry Frustrating window problems

I'm wondering if anyone else has any problems with the windows in their 2nd gen 4runner working intermitently some times they all work fine then in an instant the power windows and power locks will not work from any of the controls.Slamming the drivers side door will occasionaly help but I'd like to fix this once and for all and am in need of answers if anyone can help I appreciate it.

I'm not sure if that is the same prob I'm having but I plan on tearing her apart tonight till I figure it out. I just hope its something like a lose connection somewhere as it seemed that opening and closing the drivers side door would make it work sometimes.

Well, I took the door panel off and have checked all the fuses and still have no idea if it is a switch, bad wire or something else? It has been doing this for awhile now and affects all the windows with the exception of the moon roof. I think I'm going to take it in to have looked at, anyone have recomendations as to where to go aka Dealer or not? they may be able to narrow it down through their diagnostics? although they might charge me more than it's worth is my fear. Anyway feel free to toss me some advice as I am now completely beside myself.

Break out the volt meter and start checking for voltage (or lack thereof) at the various switch contacts. Also, see the page I posted earlier to see if the switches are the problem.

I just got off the phone with a mechanic friend and thinks it is the master controls switch due to the fact that the locks go out when the windows do. Is this common ? he said the dealer will proly screw me and replace more than is needed. I'm currently serving a time out to ensure I won't break anything out of anger I don't have a volt meter but will try the main switch first and take it from there. Thanks for the advice and keep it coming,

Eric

You can get a meter for well under $10, here's one for under $5:

I picked up a $2.99 meter from Harbor Freight several years back and keep it in the glove box. It works fine for troubleshooting in the vehicle and if it gets lost or broken on the trail, no big deal.

I feel your pain

I thought I had a mirror switch problem, so bought a new one. Turns out it was just put back in wrong :pat: (not by me). Anyway, got these in the process, have been most helpful.

can you no longer attach files here... hmm. Try these links...
pdf file electric 2nd gen
pdf file wiring 2nd gen
pdf file Mirrors 2nd gen

these might not work... or I just installed an update effecting ie and have to reboot. either way pm me if they don't work.

--they work, just needed to reboot--

Had the same problem

I had the same problem on my 94 4Runner, it would work off and on, so I ended up taking the switch apart completely. The contacts inside were dirty so I used some contact cleaner and Q-tips to clean them, then put it back together and it works just like new. Oh yeah when taking it apart, watch out for the little springs inside, they popped out on me and didn't see where they came from and could'nt find a spot where they should go back to, so I put it back together without them tried it and the switch worked fine anyhow.
