Throwout bearing usage?

It's been covered a million times... Use the 3.0 throwout bearing with either the 3.0 flywheel & clutch kit or the 3.4 flywheel & clutch kit. Well, I'm running the 3.4 stuff. I'm buying a clutch kit tonight for it. The kit I'm getting comes with the 3.4 throw out bearing though. My 3.0 throwout bearing was making a little noise when before so I wanted to replace it anyways. Will the 3.4 throwout bearing mount to the 3.0 transmission and work correctly? Or is the one that comes with the kit useless to me and I'll still have to go buy a bearing?

Basically will this combo work?

3.0 manual 2wd trans, 3.4 throwout bearing, 3.4 flywheel, 3.4 clutch/pressure plate.

Thanks
Khris

The 3.4 TO bearing will be useless to you. Your going to have to go get a 3.0 TO bearing to make it work properly.

Match clutch to motor, throwout bearing to tranny.

Use the 3.0 throwout bearing. It's not bad expensive.

Just did this yesterday.

All 3.4 clutch components (from when I had the Taco tranny in there)and went to Marlin's and got a 3.0 throw out for $25 i think. Always cheaper with walkin and cash 3.4 throwout in trash....shame only about 200 miles on it and the slave. HHHmmmmmmm........I smell a classified ad

Yeah, I'm not concerned too much about the cost... I just didn't want to walk away from the parts store tonight with the 3.4 throwout bearing that comes in the clutch kit just to find it doesn't work on the 3.0 transmission or worse yet... Physically will fit on the trans but won't engage the clutch for some reason causing me to get to pull the transmission back out again you know. LOL No biggie, I'll pickup a 3.0 throwout tonight somewhere and slap it all back in.

BTW, unfortunately I can't just walk into Marlin's shop from Vegas... I have been on some of the hammers trails with him and watched him swap out a birfield joint in what seemed like 10 minutes trailside!!! It was pretty impressive and obvious he could do it in his sleep!

if you were to throw in the 3.4 release bearing, your clutch would stay engaged. Its longer than the 3.0. It WILL fit on your input shaft though....

Thanks guys! The shop I've been dealing with has been amazing on parts in general! For instance just last week I had to replace a halfshaft on my daily driver. Pepboys/autozone/napa were all special order items and the cheapest was over $200. The place I found about a month ago, walked in, dropped off the axle, they rebuilt it on the spot to the point that it looked brand new with a 3 hour turn around time and it was $65 with a 1 year warranty!!! Customer service has been excellent too!!!

Yesterday I went in to buy the clutch kit which was Exedy brand, came with pilot and throw out bearings for the 3.4. I explained what I was doing and he told me to hold on. He went back, grabbed the throwout for the 3.0 and swapped it out in the kit!!!! How cool is that!!!

So, that said, I got the new clutch in last night and tranny tossed back in as well. I replaced the rear main seal on the tranny too since it was leaking and I had it out. WOW that old seal was a pain to pop out though!!! It was stuck in there good!

The truck will drive now finally but I'm not ready yet. I still need to fabricate a radiator fan shroud and then I'll go get the exhaust finished up as you've read in my damage thread. I also will be fabbing up a full sheet metal dash as soon as I finish the radiator shroud and will start getting the gauges all setup and going then.

Thanks again for the info everyone!

Khris
