huge problem! 5:38 spline gears in danna 44
so i was stuck in a hole and had to sit in it for about 20 min. and my breather was under water and my front diff. got water in it...needless to say i didnt know it when i got someone to pull me out i started it put it in 4 wheel drive and it started clankin. at first i thought i broke my hub so i pulled it out but it was fine. so i pulled my drain plug on my front diff. and gear oil/water came out and i the plug there was metal shavings!!i thing its my spline gears or something i dont kno much about the gears. but what do i do and where could i find the stuff to fix it?? anyone please help me.

well i pulled the diff cover off and the gears on the inside of the big gear, where there are two and they spin vertically, the top one had barely any teeth left on it...someone said it was my spider gear but like i said i dont kno that much about gears. and is d44 bad in a yota or something i was told they were really good? where do i find the stuff to fix it and can i do it myself? does it have to be reshimmed?

It's probably not a good idea to tackle this if you do not know a decent amount about the subject. It is likely that you will end up in the same situation, not too far down the road. I am not saying that it is impossible to do by yourself; just merely proposing that paying for two sets of gears (after your destroy the first by a bad setup) is equally, if not more, expensive than having someone do it professionally.
Check out http://www.gearinstalls.com/ for information regarding gear installations.
By the way, I did my rear Detroit locker. I reinstalled it 4 times due to my paranoia about my setup and it did not even require setting pinion depth, but that might just be my own worrying...it works flawlessly, now. Good luck.

Ok. Unfortunately, you will have to remove the diff and likely the ring gear to replace the spider gears. You could just replace them with a lunchbox style locker. I have seen many people, knowing nothing about setting gears, install these without any harm. I believe that the D44 uses shims to set the CBPL, so just remember the exact process of removing the unit and reverse the order to reinstall.

yea i read on another forum that you could replace the spider gear without having to take the ring gear out but only if the ring gear was small enough....i dont think mine is? and the only website i could really find for anything like a lunchbox locker was http://www.my4by.com/lockers-and-spo...53_62_199.html
i really dont kno which one to get? and i heard that i would have reshim everything once i took the ring gear out? i will post some pics of it later today. so u can see whats goin on.
