Turbo Gauges

Hey all, I've searched for this and havn't found anything very useful. I have a Turbo Cluster (non-digital) that I'm trying to swap into my Std Cab P/U.

I disconnected the "Idiot" light sensor, plugged in the gauges and the 4wd lights work and the warning lights all work but I have no Fuel, Temp, Tach, and Volt gauges. I've heard that you have to rewire a couple things. Can anyone on here help me with this?

I'm not really looking to go buy another SR5 cluster either. Just want to put the Turbo cluster in

isn't there a thread on here describing what pins are what and what needs to be moved around? I think there is. I know I had to use it when I did mine.

thanks, it seems like every time i search your build thread shows up, haha. I'll keep looking.

that thread i've read several times but it really doesnt apply to a turbo cluster does it?

The cluster I have has a mechanical speedo input so its not the digital, its all analog but from what i hav been told i have to move some wires around in the OE harness

ok it's not in that thread, but, what i need to know is what year yours is and what year the new cluster is. I will figure out which wires were what on the old and what wires were what on the new so you can swap the old wires to the new pins. I think that's what I ended up doing on mine. Just got to know which trucks I need to get the wiring diagrams for.

haha it's more of a repair thread then a build thread.

its a 1985 ext. cab frame with a 1985 standard cab.

the gauges i have no clue, they were given to me.

I know they changed the gauge faces on different years so maybe a description will help.

It's got the turbo LED under the tach, it also has a white checkerboard pattern across the entire faceplate.

It looks just like the one in the background of the below pic

would you be able to ask the person you got the gauge cluster from what it came off of? only have a few choices though as those gauges were only made from 84-88 in the pickups and 4runners and I believe an 89 4runner as well.
for the time being try to find the wiring diagram for your 85. I don't think it's gonna matter if it has the ext or the reg cab wiring harness.

ok I will start there. Not sure how fast I will be able to do this though as I am working on like 4 different things right now. But at least I think I got you pointed in the right direction.

so things needed as of right now, wiring diagram of an 85 pickup 22R-E (yours is EFI right and not carb?) and an 89 4runner 22R-TE

i am really struggling to find these diagrams. I've actually been searching for a Std 22RE wiring diagram since about 8:30

oh and mine's an auto which may be the whole problem. I found a thread stating that the Auto 22RE has a different pinout

it did, pretty sure of it, but my cluster is from an auto and it's now in my manual pickup. So it should still work the other way around, I just cannot remember which pins i had to move and for what gauge(s). I want to say the fuel level is one because the sr5's and/or newer body styles had the low level light.

try autozone repair manuals, they are usually pretty good with wiring diagrams.

FYI, the oil pressure gauge will not work till you get the sending unit for the new cluster. Old sending unit switch will not work. And the tach may or may not work as it's a crap shoot whether or not the truck was prewired for the tach. Mine was not and I had to run a wire from the diag connector on the coil to the cluster.

wiring a tach signal wont be an issue. i actually just finished up wiring a switch panel so my brains toast on trying to find signals and whatnot. Im curious as to how much work is going to have to be done. How many wired do you think I'll have to switch around?

My 89 4Runner Cluster did not have the checkerboard pattern, but My 86 did.
If you do have a Turbo cluster, then it didn’t come out of an 89, late 88 maybe, but not
89. 88 was the last year for the turbo option.
If you are not familiar with the Toyota wiring diagrams and the FSM and you are trying to make sense of them you will come across the one thing that drives me crazy about Toyota. Especially if you are trying to trace the combination meter circuits, there are three connectors at the back. I’ll list the wiring for an 86, it may be close to yours, but in the 86 wiring diagram book Toyota calls the white 12 pin connector “A”, the 8 pin “B” and the 12 pin blue connector “C”. In the FSM Toyota calls the 12 pin white “C” the 8 pin “B” and the 12 pin blue “A”. So if you are trying to trace wiring from both books it can get very confusing!
That’s the end of my Rant!!!!
Now to the diagrams:-
Orientation:- If you are looking at the face of the plug (not the back of the cluster) with the lock on top, #1 is on the left. I’ll list all of the wires, but your harness may or may not have all of these.

12 pin Blue Connector;
1) A/T temp warning light Red/Yellow
2) 22RTE oil pressure sender Yellow/Black
3) Back door unlock warning light 22RTE or 22RE with ECT Green/Red
or
3) 22RE or 22R oil pressure switch / gauge Yellow/Black
4) Back door warning light 22RTE or 22RE w/o ECT Green/Red
or
4) TCCS ECU check engine light 22RTE Violet
5) 22RTE or 22RE with ECT Tach Signal Black
or
5) TCCS ECU check engine light 22RE Violet
6) 22RE w/o ECT or 22R Tach Signal Black
or
6) w/ECT:- ECT select sw. Normal Black/Yellow
7) Water Temp Sender Yellow/Green
8) n/a
9) w/ECT:- ECT select sw. Power Green/Orange

8 Pin Connector;
1) n/a
2) Left turn signal Green/Black
3) n/a
4) Speed sensor from Cruise Control & ECU Green/Blue
5) Illumination power fr. Tail Lt. Fuse Green
6) To Light Rheostat Red/Black
7) Ground Black/White
8) Right Turn Signal Green/Yellow

12 pin White Connector;
1) Head Light Dimmer Sw. Red/Green
2) 4wd Indicator Red/Yellow
3) n/a
4) Ground 22RE w/o ECT & 22R White/Black
or
4) 22RTE TCCS ECU Turbo Light Green/Blue
5) 22RE Fuel Gauge Sender Term. #1 Yellow/Red
or
5) Ground 22RTE & 22RE w ECT White/Black
6) 22RTE fuel Gauge Sender Yellow/Red
7) Seat Belt Warning Light Green
8) FR. Charge Fuse Yellow/White
9) Fr. Ignition Fuse Black/Yellow
10) Fuel Level Warning Sw. Yellow/Blue
11) Fr. Engine Fuse Yellow
12) Parking Brake Sw. or Fluid Level Sw. Green/White

That should give you some idea, if your cluster isn't from an 86 this might not be the same.
