aftermarket cruise works only to 55mph?
bought an 86 4runner deluxe recently, came equipped with aftermarket cruise that he claimed worked. You do have to hold the button in for a good 4-5 seconds to get it to take, but it wont hold any speed over 55 mph. Strange. I doubt its a fuse, since it actually works, but you only discover this when you slow down for something, like the toll gate. Then it surges ahead all of the sudden to maintain the 55mph speed. Any ideas? Electrical stuff is kind of ghosty and hard to troubleshoot it seems to me.

if the engine is a "tired" 22RE that wont surprise me.
There were TWO kinds of aftermarket based cruise
-- vac based
-- stepper motor cable based
The vac ones rely on engine vac - which you only get an non full throttle situations.... so a tired motor thats truggling to turn bigger tires is NOT going to be able to hold a cruise becuase the vac wont hold....
Back in the day when my motor was fresher - I had the same thing happen at 65 when cruising across Kansas etc..
Upgrade to an stepper motor type... which BTW is how the OEM one works...
Or rebuild the motor

If only I would have saved the one I took off mine I would have given it away. I bought my '86 and it had the stepped motor cable based. dind't need it or want it so in the trash it went. I guess some things are worth hangin on to?

Add a vacuum cannister, that may help with the higher speed operation. I have the factory CC in my '85 and it'll hold 70+ with no issues. I added a cannister and that let the servo pull down to around 2" Hg. on the engine vacuum, before it stopped in the 3"-4" range.
Also, if your CC module has adjustments for sensitivity, try making some. If it is an older analog unit, you have a gain and offset adjustment, if digital it'll have some switches to change the sensitivity. The units are usually shipped at the lowest sensitivity and it can make a huge difference if you crank it up a little.

Google around - I forget who made mine..
I went through TWO from NAPPA (vac type) before I found a stepper motor type...
On the NAPPA ones I was extracting the circuit board and remote mounting them to get it away from the coil.
I think the voltage drop or the current push for the extended wires fried them...)
BTW - when the NAPPA ones worked - they ran at about the same rate that Roger's did (aka 3" of vac or so before they clicked off)

really? ok, I'll try looking for a place to make adjustments. Would that generally be found at a control/head unit in the engine bay, or maybe under the dash? The stalk is so small (3-4 inches long) that I cant imagine it would be on the stalk.

On the stepper motor ones, the control unit could be anywhere. Probably under the dash or in the kick panel tho.
The OEM one is in the kick panel...
