Suspension questions for 2002 4runner sport
I just got my 2002 4runner sport a few months ago and it's mod time. It is the lowrider of 4runners. I spent 3 days researching every lift option for the 2002 sport. So which one is the best to go with? I don't want to go over 3" because of the cv nightmare issue; I had one company tell me that OME's are not technically meant for 4runners and that Downey is the king; talked to Danohoe - they say they are the best for offroad desert (I live in the sierras - you can litterally drive from one side of the state to the other without hitting pavement so desert is good). Before I make a decision; I was really hoping to get some real feedback from other lifters to see what they think is best and what problems they have encountered - if any. I noticed that RockSlide and some others have an ss (senora steel?? maybe) system. Oh yeah, and did any of you do this lift yourselves; or is it strictly a pro shop thing??

What is your budget? If your looking at CO's, than your talking big $$. Thoroughly read the Sonoran Steel website to answer most any question about suspension setups.

I've had the Sonoran Steel 7.2 since spring on my 2002. The ride is good and the parts are top quality. The CV's are angled, but between a bit of settling and the diff drop, I'm not too worried about it.
I did the install by myself, though I had the front strut assemblies put together by Sonoran Steel so I wouldn't have to piss around with the spring compressor or worn out rubber bits.
The worst part was removing the old rear shocks. If you have no experience wrenching, then I wouldn't suggest making this your first major job. But it is doable and the instructions were well written and reasonably clear.

I probably came off a little green to you guys. This is the third 4runner Iv'e bought in the last 4 years. I also have a '99 and a '97. I have a great deal of wrenching experience, just not with foreign trucks. I will probably go with the Sonoran Steel. One outfit said the truck had to be aligned once the lift was complete. Has anyone whos lifted done this??

I went with the OME 881 / 906 combo... I looked at all of the options and choose this one. I am very pleased with it! SS kits are great but i didnt need the lift that it would provide. With the OME on my 02 sport i got about 3 in the back and 2 3/4 in the front.

downey springs are crap compaired to OME and what size tire are you thinking about running that might help decide what lift to go with and what type of driving will you mostly be doing...

That's why I had to put off doing even basic maintenance myself. Finding a mechanic that knew Japanese was a challenge.
Then I found Yotatech and all was good.
Domo arigato!
