It would be cheaper if you could find some 4.88 third members and just swap them out, otherwise you would need to buy new gears and have them installed, and that`s more expensive.

I am new to this and don't understand what third members are. Any direction to information I can read or an explanation would be awesome. What I was wondering was can I find 4.88 gears, which I understand to come from a v-6, and put them in a 4.10 axle if not what do I need to change. I believe the the gear code for 4.88's to be g144 can the g144 gears go right into the stock 4.10 axle. Thank you for any guidance

The third member is what the drive shafts connect to at the front and rear axles, you can swap 4.88 thirds from a V6 into 4 cylinder axles if you have a solid front axle. It would help to know what year your truck is. Just start searching and reading, all the information you could ever need it here.
