I have a 1984 toyota 4x4 reg cab pickup carbureted 22R and was wondering what i should do to get higher speeds on the highway. It tops out at about 75 running at about 3100 RPMs, with the pedal on the floor. Have 31x10.5 15r tires on it with a 5 speed tranny and stock gearing.

Is there any specific reason you need to travel faster than 75 mph on the highway to begin with? Significantly decreasing your fuel efficiency for the sake of saving at best 20 minutes off your drive time seems counter intuitive to me.

How are you measuring your speed? By the Speedometer--if so you are already going over 75 because your truck speedo is set up for 225/75/15's or are you measuring your speed with a GPS?

Weird.
I max out at around 80MPH. Pedal to the floor.
4.30's and 30" tires.
Theres no real reason you need to go past 70 in one of these trucks, lol.
Theyre about as aerodynamic as a brick anyways.

You are doing over 80 when your speedo says 75 if you haven't regeared to match the 31's. Time to get a gps reading.

And I still have yet to see what I top out at. Need to get to work faster and dig the 22r? Get a celica.

well i guess what i really want to know is what would yall recommend to get a little more power out of it that is relatively inexpensive and the 75 mph is with a gps reading.
I put a remanufactured engine in about 30,000miles ago and it doesnt seem to have the power that my old engine had.

I regeared to 4.56's to match my 31's. Power is much better, and I don't have to downshift to pass anyone on the freeway.

I found gears on CL for 220, so after I was done buying gear oil I was sitting around 250 for a complete regear.

There is nothing you can do. 3500 lb truck and 100 horsepower motor= slow going
You can do a header, exhaust and tune up. And squeak out a tiny tiny bit of HP.
You just wont make a fire breathing monster out of a 22R/22RE

My '86 with a 22RE could do 85, and that was the reading my spedometer gave me with 31's. A lot of it is a well tuned truck with good compression. And of course this was on flat ground. But highway speeds were never an issue on flat ground in that truck. Now my '83 is a completely different story...engine gets pretty darned loud at 70mph+, and the handling gets pretty scary. For that truck, 70 is as fast as I go, even though it can go faster.

I don't think this is an issue of should you go that fast...we all want our trucks to have that power, whether or not we use it. You've got to be able to pass sometimes, and if, at 65mph, you're about topped out and flooring it, you're kind of out of luck if there's a slow truck ahead of you.

Thanks for the info, i think im going to go ahead and regear it for the 31's and see what that does.

I agree with you. The huge increase in power will never happen. BUT, if you regear to match the diameter of the tires you are moving the power band back into a drivable rpm on the highway, giving you the illusion of "way more power" but its going to perform better on hills and for passing on the highway.

4.10's and 31's- 65 mph at about 2500 rpms, it would lug if you gassed it, since its short of the powerband.

4.56's and 31's- 65 mph is at 2800 rpms, the bottom of the power band, now it will respond if you hit the throttle to pass someone.


So when guys say they feel like they gained a gear, they are just meaning 5th gear is usable, among other things. Some guys use 5th to cruise, then drop down to pass, others just don't use it all, until they regear.
