Is it clicking from the top end? Toyotas are known for valve tick. When was the last time the valves were adjusted?

Question

Sounds like top end. No idea on when valves were or if they were adjusted, just got the truck at 165, 000. Why would it only do it when hot tho? It runs killer and gets 32 mpg. In the morning noise isnt there at all.

Oil is thicker when cool. Either muffling the tick, or preventing it by being thicker when cool. What brand and weight oil are you running? Last time oil was changed, and by who?

A valve adjustment on a 2RZ or 5VZ is a little more involved than a 22R(E). Cams have to be removed and the valve bucket have shims. So you have to measure the clearance on each valve, and add/remove shims accordingly. Do your research before attempting, or get your wallet out if a reputable shop does it...

Like was said, Toyotas usually have some tick. It's from a combination of injectors and valve train. So even if you get the valves adjusted, there still can be some tick from the injectors. Just giving you some realistic expectations to realize.

As said, oil thickness can cause the situation you're seeing (or hearing).
I highly advise checking valve clearance and adjusting as necessary.
The 2RZ and 3RZ engines are known for burning a valve and/ or cracking the head from the valves getting too tight.
See below link for instructions.

It's not hard, just takes some time...

man oh man I got under the truck today with it running sounds like it's coming from the bottom and actually upon further inspection. good old Jiffy Lube changed it out about a month ago and I'm running 10 30 synthetic, full synthetic.the motor is so small it was hard to tell where it was coming frm at first. Mabey piston slap? I appreciate the responses. should I be running regular crude oil?
