22re Starter, same between generations?
I need to do the starter contacts on my girlfriends 95 4runner with a 22re. I found a used starter with almost new contacts for 30 bucks, considering the contacts are about that from the dealer, I wanted to just swap it out.
Only thing, the starter is from a 87 22re. So, are they interchangeable? Or should I just rebuild the sucker... Thanks guys!

The solenoids themselves all wire up the same, but the body where the starter motor itself mounts is a little different. Id say if you took the back case off the solenoid off(the three bolts) the internals of the solenoid should be the same but your not really going to know unless you tear it apart

I know there are some internal changes in the contacts from year to year and there are two different power rated starter motors (1.0 and 1.4 kW) but I think they are all interchangeable on the engine, but I am not 100% sure on that.
Replacements contacts are also available for less than the dealer charges if you wanted to go the rebuild route:
